View Full Version : Curious: How long will a ton last you?
If you had a ton of lead & were able to cast it into the boolits of your choice how long do you think it would take you to shoot it all? A year?

about 75,000 rounds? depends on how many waves of zombies come over the fence.
Prolly take me the rest of my life to cast them boogers unless Yammer puts the wheels back of that shop he has and rolls it and the magic mega bullet pooper down this way.

A ton really isn't that much lead.

Further, is that a ton of pure, WW, lino? Clean?
Oreo, I'll give you $10 delivered to South Bend, IN.
I never said I had a ton of lead. I'm lucky if I got 20lbs worth- including the solder I still plan on using for soldering.
I was just curious 'cause I hear a few people on here mention reaching the 2 ton mark as if that's a cue to back off the acquisitioning. But when I do the math that's about 1 - 2 years worth of a solid range day per week. So, you're right that it really isn't that much. For some of you bitter people clinging to your bibles & guns I'd figure you wouldn't stop hoarding lead till you have near 10 tons.
Anyone here actually have 10 tons?

All depends upon what ya shootin ;)
Outta a 1911 or P220 it a last a lot longer of course.

Whatdahell happened Jawja ?
You musta been shootin em regular
I know I said this before but after a while it seems like it's just gotta make sense to build your own steel bullet trap to recycle the lead you already got. I mean, think about it... at that point you really wouldn't have to worry about alloying anymore, & maybe not even smelting.
Slick, that's 80 lbs / day for you. That's GOTTA beat whoring the local tire shops.

I have 10 tons - it is just still in the berms at the range, though. :)
I don't have a particular amount of lead that I'm shooting for, especially since I view bermining as a nice way of getting some exercise. A ton, though, would last me a long, long, long time right now since my main caliber for casting is 9mm. Once I get into .45-70 and .375 H&H my lead usage will go up due to the size of each bullet, but a ton would still last me a long time. Lets see, a ton would be 14 million grains or about 60-70K mixed 9mm/.45-70/.375 bullets. Yikes, yes, that would last me a long time at the rate I currently shoot.

Nope, just a little stack will make a ton.
Im sure a ton would last me several years+. But if I was to retire and didnt feel like scroungin, started shootin a lot more, its a "nest egg"
This is a ton

The problem being, Oreo, most folks don't have a welder or the skills to weld and fabrication is expensive.

Trust me Craig, once you start casting 45-70, the bullets will weigh a lot more but you can shoot a hell of a lot more 9mm in a range trip.
Sunday, 28 440g 45-70 mortars were launched down range last week, a record for me. 82 of my 150g 9mm's use the same amount of lead and I shoot 2-300 of them about every trip. I can tell you I won't be shooting 28 45-70s again for a while, at least until i forget how much it banged up my right shoulder.
Mrs Cohutt's shoes take up about the same space as my smelted lead, and she doesn't have that many of them compared to a lot of womens.......
The leadbricks on the right weigh over 1000 lbs - 157 of them - about same space as 6-8 shoe boxes

Yup, and I was trying to factor that in by averaging my shot bullet weight to being in the 200-233 gr each category. Who knows, I might like shooting the big bores so much that my average bullet is more towards their end of the scale. If that happens, though, my average shots per week would likely drop quite a bit. Either way, with my lack of free time for a lot of shooting, a ton would last me a long time.

Hey Cohutt, by the way, you're not supposed to show the specially marked lead/aluminum ingots used for monkey magnum bullets. :26:
The problem being, Oreo, most folks don't have a welder or the skills to weld and fabrication is expensive. Is it? I mean, I don't know. But within 3 miles of here there have got to be 10 little run down shacks all with guys advertising tig welding for lawn mowers & autos. Seems to me that if you can sweet talk the local tire shops you ought to be able to sweet talk the local welder into doing a job for you for a reasonable price. Assuming I was willing to deliver steel precut- which shouldn't be that hard.
Seems to me the steel would be a major expense. Not to mention- how big a trap you want & where you're going to put it when you're done.
Hmmm starting a new thread on this subject....

Some guys have made traps, I shoot at a "public" range so anything I used would have to be semi portable. Semi-portable usually doesent equal something "heavy duty"
For now its easier to scrounge, if it gets to bad Ill start berm mining.

A ton is approx. 65,000 bullets. When I was shooting competetively a few years ago, that would last me about 3yrs. Now days, I'ld probably be set for life w/ a ton of casting alloy.:driving:
