View Full Version : Die question
I'm in the process of setting up my Dillon 550b and I wanted to used a powder check die. The only I can think of is to use the Lee die that seats and crimps in station 4. I think it will work since I'm loading 45acp rounds and later some 9mm. Need some advice....:)

It's certainly doable to seat and crimp at the same time...I don't, but others do. I'd strongly recommend the RCBS Lockout Die for the position right after the powder drop.

Most seating dies have a crimp profile machined into them. It can be more difficult to adjust a die to seat and crimp but it is not really that hard.

I was wondering about that too??
Thanks for the input. Walt, I bought the RCBS Lockout Die when a shooter at the range had a serious KB with 45acp. Several folks I know who have it say it works great.:patriot:

I was trying to teach a friend of mine to reload on his new RCBS Pro2000, when we caught him double-charging some rounds. I had to leave the premises for a short while and told the friend and his son-in-law not to do anything until I got back. Son-in-law grabbed a handful of loaded rounds and went out to try out his brand-new G30. On the second round, he had a KB.
When friend contacted RCBS, they advised him that Lockout Dies were mandatory for all their Pro2000 presses in R&D. They sent him a Lockout Die free, believe-it-or-not. Glock fixed the blown-up G30 pretty inexpensively and gave the poor guy a free set of night sights.
Unfortunately, the young man discovered a short time later that he had lymphoma, and he died a coupla years ago.
I use the Lockout Die on my 650, as I believe it to be a better product than Dillon's buzzer system.

I would urge you not to try to seat and crimp in the same die.
(Please take out your BS detectors. I am telling you stuff that was told to me from a reliabily source but I have in no way verifired any of it. )
It was explained to me like this. When you try to seat and crimp at the same time you start pressing the walls of the case tighter against the bullet while the bullet is still being pressed into the case. I was told (so take this withe a dose of salt) that this can lead to damaged cases near the base from the downward pressure. It can cause damaged bullets as the case scraps against the bullet. I was told doing these two operation in one die can cause issues in relaibilty, accuracy and reduce case life.
If you want a powder check get a 650
Sorry
Gyoko your point is well taken but what about Lee pro 1000s etc. Lee has been using that 3 die system for year and users cranked out a lot of ammo with it. I :)would rather seat and then crimp but all this came up about the same time as I ordered my new 550b. I 've never heard of any KBs due to the two function dies but I personally have seen KBs from double charging. I look down the case of every round I produce prior to seating, etc.. I probably should have ordered a 650 but I didn 't so what system will prevent KBs best. Don't really know. Thank you for your input.

On the down stroke, place a bullet on top of the charged case in station two. No chance of a double charge. You can't dump powder in a case that has a bullet on top of it.
So Adam, that means station 1 (de-cap/size),station 2 primer/charge slip bullet on), station 3 (seat bullet), station 4 (crimp). Have I got it?

Station 1: size/deprime/reprime on downstroke
Station 2: belling and powder charge drop
Station 3: bullet seating
Station 4: crimping
When I load I put a case in station 1, raise the ram, seat the primer, index, place a case in station 1 raise the ram as I reach for a bullet. On the down stroke I seat the primer (bottom of ram travel) and then hold the handle forward while I place the bullet on the case in station 2, which has just been belled and charged with powder. This also makes a good time to LOOK into the case to make sure the powder charge is right. You should be able to see the level in the case when you put the bullet on it and know if it is too much or too little.
I grab an empty case with my right hand, index with my left hand, and place the case in station one, then raise the ram and repeat.
If you have to get the phone, answer the door, go to the bathroom, etc, when you use the above procedure, when you come back to your press, you can see a bullet on top of the case in station 2, indicating you have a charged case, ready to be indexed to station 3 for seating.

If you want to use a powder-check system on a 550, you'll need to seat and crimp at the same time. Zillions of rounds have been loaded that way, with no ill effects.

Bell seat and crimp easy to do. Takes a couple of cases to set the crimp to your liking.
Peace

This is the result if you always place the bullet in station two and then you try and double charge.

Video is taking a long time to process. It should be up soon. Run a search for my username on YouTube, the video is called Safe loading procedure on Dillon RL550B in case it finishes before I can upload it. I'm battling strep throat and a sinus infection, so I'm heading down for a nap.

OK, holy crap. I took the video down and uploaded it again. After 7 hours, it's finally done.
Here's what I was talking about. I ran out of primers but explained it better than in here. I have strep throat and a sinus infection, so I sound really weird.

Hard to tell from here, but you might be having a bullet setback issue.
