I've been reading for a number of weeks on casting, smelting, and fire and such. I'm suprised that I haven't seen any waste oil rigs from the CRB group...:patriot:

I think you would need to pressurize or vaporize it to get it to burn hot enough - but I am no expert... I'd be interested to learn more!

Waste oil is a doable option for smelting and casting iron, brass and such but generates a bit more Btu's than I'd care to use with lead. It is used by quite a few people and you can chek out backyardmetalcasting and a few other forums to read about. Nope Weber, the waste oil isn't pressurised like propane, it's all in the burner's. I'm in the process of hunting for scrap materials to build a foundry furnace myself, just a problem with time, weather and money at the moment. Will post an update later on about it.

Back when I worked on one of the local farms, they had something called a smudge pot that they burnt used motor oil in. That thing would make the flue redhot putting off lots of heat really fast. It was used to provide heat for an open air tractor shelter while we worked on worn out equipment. It was definetly hot enough for smelting.

There is some amazing (simple) stuff out there. I don't know enough about it to speak on the topic, but some pretty simple designed certainly put out more than enough heat to melt lead (the concern there for me too...would be getting it too hot)

For space heating...lots of really cool stuff there too.

If its too hot its a simple matter of just removing it from the heat once melted. When youre smelting its just getting the stuff melted ; fluxed and into ingots.

FWIW a 20lb bottle of propane will do 1000+lb of WW . Im not sure how much trouble I would go thru for another solution.

If I had a lot of old oil to burn up it would be worth looking into.

I run a waste oil heater in my shop and they definitely put out the heat. Its a forced air unit and the oil is sprayed through a special injector and atomized into a cone with lots of air. Gets hot enough that it needs a specially double lined chimney. Mine is the baby unit and it puts out 150k btu's and only burns a gallon an hour. 5,500.00 for the turn-key kit so they aint cheap.

Creekwater mentioned one of the site I read up on: http://www.backyardmetalcasting.com/oilburners02.html

There are various designs to be found online.

And, for those that want to heat a space: http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel_library/ethanol_motherearth/me4.html

The place I work burns waste veggie oil to heat the place. Puts out great heat but it is involved to get the setup down.

I got one in the works now, amongst many other projects. Drilled the 0.010" on a buddy's mill by moving the knee up very slowly. Stuck a cat hair in the hole to make sure it was all the way through. We tested it over in his shop by pouring a mix of used oil and kerosene over the knob by hand and it worked beautifully. Now I just need to set it up with a pump, burner tube, and a place to sit the lead pot.
