So, after Slick's post about rifles, I looked more into getting a Tikka. Right now, it's between a Tikka or a Rem 700 SPS, depending on which I can get a better deal on. My question for you folks is between 7mm mag and 300 win mag, which is more of a do all caliber? I'm looking for something to learn how to shoot long distance on, but at the same time know it has enough punch to drop up to a Brown Bear.

If those are the only choices, 300 Win Mag is what I'd pick.

"Punch to drop a Brown Bear" is tough to define. Shot placement is king. NO shoulder-fired round transmits enough energy to drop one via energy alone. More does seem desirable in this case. ;)

300, bigger is better.

I'd go 300 WM. Its bigger, better, more selection, American, anti-Obama.

A friend of mine once said that the 300 "will get there with more poop in its pants."

Right now I am trying to figuring if my next one will be 300WM or .338 Lapua.

Just in case you are on the same journey I am currently on, here are some cool actions to look at.

I'd consider a RUM before .338 L, unless you got money to burn.

You have to love the available .711 BC of the 240 grain Sierra for 300WM, although Hornady does offer a 162 grain .625 BC bullet for 7mag.

Where you gonna shoot around here that you're gonna need a .711 BC bullet?

I'd be all about a custom rifle, but I have no experience shooting about 100 yds, so as of yet, it'd be a waste. That, and readily available places in MD for long range shooting is scarce. I'm working on some leads though.

I'm thinking road trip to Wyoming.

I could probably find some distance at the farm, but not as much as I needed unless I kept it on the road. I would probably be jailed and disowned if I tried such a feat.

ETA: I can't even dream of hitting anything as far out as a bullet like that is good for, but why should that squelch the dream? You have seen how poorly I shoot, and should know better than to ask a reality based question.

I'd like to get out and try some acutal long range stuff.

I'd be happy to find a consistent shooting buddy/ time to shoot.

There's a club right around the corner pretty much, but they're private and don't hold public shoots. And they also have a membership cap, so finding people is a problem. I've run into a few, but they haven't been willing to sponsor me.

Take one to dinner or buy him a drink, you'll be in right quick...

My wife and I have been trying to make it shooting more often. So far, we are aiming at once a week.

She is getting fairly good with a Mark iii.

I still suck.

Or shoot one...that always clears up a spot.

I used to be active on MDShooters.com. I asked around for to see if anyone would mind sponsoring me, or letting me tag along to the range. Nothing. Pretty much got snobbed out. Met a guy in a class one night that said he'd sponsor me. As soon as the semester was over, didn't hear from him again. I don't like the idea of a club that likes to lord membership status over others.

Same here, but my club has put our 2/3rds+ completed 600 yard range on hold due to budget problems. Sigh.

I have both calibers and I would get the .300 win mag. Both of mine are Ruger MKII M77 SS.

A lot more reloading options with 30 cal bullets. I ended up buying the 300 win mag on gunbroker. I got it for 350 NLIB. It was in excellent shape. I just threw the bid up and no one out bid me. I put a Nikon 4.5-14 on it. I can't wait for deer hunting. I'm currently shooting 72gr of IMR4350 pushing a 180gr nosler BT.

I'm pretty much set on the 300. I plan on getting a Garand for my graduation present, unless I can find a good deal on a Taurus .454. Since it uses the same size bullet, it'll cut down on my costs.

Let me know if you need any brass. I have some extra pieces for cheap.

I'm a 7mm fan. Hard to argue with a 175gr from a 7mm Mag.

A 300 would kill a 7mm in a bar fight.
