I was loading up some 10mm Auto just now. I'd finished up a small batch of 180 grain FMJ and was loading up another batch with 155 grain XTPs (I'd already charged all the cases and had seated the 180s). I stick the first bullet in the case and am about to put it on the ram to seat it when I realize this cartridge feels awful light, much lighter than the 180s I'd just gotten finished with. I looked at it and just happened to notice it's hollow! I threw it up on the scale just for grins, and it's 25-30 grains. Heh.

None of the others in the box look to have the same problem, but I'll be paying extra close attention.

If you load the other bullets so they fly base first they will be much more deadly.
If you fill it with epoxy and launch it at 2500 FPS it will make a fine short range self defense load.

What powder would one use for getting high velocities with such a lite bullet?
WTF perhaps?
Back in the day I melted the lead out of some Sierra 170gr JHC bullets and replaced it with gluegun glue. I seated them on top of 11 grains of 231 in 357 brass and launched them at that velocity from a 4" GP-100. They made a fist-sized hole in wet newsprint at 25 yards.

Only 11 grains of 231?
Chicken?

Some FFFg and a small pistol primer (that's been seated in a case and then slowly popped back out) over the mouth would be a "blast" to shoot. :sifone:

12 grains gave slightly sticky extraction.

I'll try to bring the sanity scale back down, and tell you to call Hornady and get a free box of bullets OR stick a piece of 4130 and call it AP. That will put fear in the MAN!!! opps scale maxed again...

That will put fear in the MAN!!! opps scale maxed again...The first thought briefly crossed my mind, but I've had good luck with Hornady (well, all bullet manufacturers, thus far), and none of the other bullets in that box are messed up. It's probably just that 1 bullet in 50 million that somehow slipped past quality control. No harm, no foul.

Fill it with DU for the next Fandango Fire!!
Fill it with mercury and cap it with epoxy.
Fill it with Bullseye. Cap it with a primer
Edited to Add:
Don't do it. It is dangerous.

Na 'Funkstafunkie' I'm sure they would love to know what lot or batch it came from so they can QC the issue. At the very least they owe you one bullet, and if they decide to throw a box at you - take it as payment for saving others from receiving an incomplete product.
Now get back there and fill it with poopie or ben-gay or pringle dust or what ever you have laying around. :treerat:

Alright, I let them know, and I loaded it up with garlic and sealed it with super glue and a magnum small pistol primer. I'm ready for vampires, wet newsprint, and light armor.
