View Full Version : Open letter to all those who don't run Redding Pro dies

I've been getting a bit more familar with my Redding dies, as I dragged myself home for two days. These things rock and have been bumped into my greatest things list (automatic weapons, Star sizer, sex, to name a few).
For those of you not running them, get them yesterday. Best off the shelf handgun dies money can buy, I'm not sure custom are any better. Slicker than snot.

I should have added, not in any particular order. Your last comment reminds me of a conversation I had over drinks a couple months back, althought I might not want to post it here.

A few months back, a few of us got together for drinks, one weekend, after a particularly bad week, and a shooting session (the shooting session was good mind you). We had been shooting the firearms, reloading, and had a good day. After we finished with the firearms (and put them away I might add), we decided it was time to solve the worlds problems over bourbon.
You have to understand when we get together, there's three things we talk about, guns and gun culture, making money (is there anything in life more important? ;)), and getting ass.
I believe one of the comments went something like this, "I should be home getting ass, but I don't have time." I believe more than a few of us knew the feeling.

Help me understand WHY? Are they just smooth? Do they size as low as the LEE? Whats the big deal?

Smooth finish, perfect threads, depth adjustment allows for very small adjustments and locks rock solid.
I can't tell ya about sizing down as far as Lees, since I n\been buyin em to load revolver rounds, plus I already had dies to load semi auto pistol with.
From .32 Mag ta 500 SW, they the best experience I ever had wit some dies.
From now on, it all Redding ProSets for me. They make a 3 die set for progressives; size/decap, seat, crimp. Work like a champ in my Dillon rigs

Look close at Reddings website to get da right set. They also sell a 3 die set with size/decap, expander, crimp/seat.
If you're loadin on a progressive, a Pro Set is da way ta go, size/decap, seat only, seperate crimp.
Usually run about $50-60

Just for the 9mm crowd in Redding
Off the Midway USA site
Comp Pro Set $127.99, Progressive Die Set
Carbide Set $68.99, For Single stage/Turret
Pro Series $77.99, Progressive Die Set
I do wonder if you are giving up a little sizing on the bottom part of a case for that "Progressive" set. You do on the Dillon dies. It makes me nervous.

I know that a lot of the benchrest guys use Redding dies, but they ARE kind of wierd.
I've used Reddings in several calibers & haven't really seen a difference in results, prarie dogs die just as dead with ammo loaded using Lee Collet neck sizing dies, & the money I've saved helps buy more components.
If I could SEE a notable difference in another brand of dies, I'd buy them, just because I qualify as a professional tool whore !
Most of my Dillons have Lee dies because they work.

I categorically refuse to use Redding dies.
In both .45 ACP and .38 Super, they simply fail to do what I need done. They are not built for it, they don't do it, and I have to have it.

I second MMAP's question: What is the "it" that those dies don't do? Is it specific to those calibers or are those the only ones you've tried?

Hi,
I do wonder if you are giving up a little sizing on the bottom part of a case for that "Progressive" set. You do on the Dillon dies. It makes me nervous.
Redding dies have the tallest 9mm resizing carbide ring of any die I've seen. This is necessary to resize a 9mm case because it is slightly tapered. Many other manufacturers dies try to "straightwall" a 9mm case with a small carbide ring of a single diameter.
I ordered a Redding Pro Series 44 Magnum die set today. If all goes well on a trade this week I'll be back in 44 Magnum business!!!
Thanks,
Alan
