View Full Version : Had any guns you DON'T miss?

I see threads here and there about guns that people regret letting go. Don't seem to hear too much about the guns that didn't cut it for one reason or the other, so thought I'd throw out a few I've had that I was glad to see the last of.

1. Spanish no-name 12 gauge single barrel: It was choked like a rifle with a thin buttstock, only weighed 5 1/4 pounds. With every load, it hurt your shoulder and smacked your cheek. With 1 ounce field loads, you would get cut once in a while by the rear edge of the trigger guard hitting your middle finger. I made the mistake of (once) firing a 4 dram equivalent 1 1/2 ounce load of #2's. I got all of the above beating, in spades, and also got to enjoy the opening lever gouging the web of my hand hard enough to break open the action. I remember calculating the recoil of that load at around 70 lbs. (more than 3 times what an average '06 has; dreadful is the only word that comes close to it). Couldn't stand it, couldn't use it. (One little plus; that scrawny stock was nicely figured walnut.)

2. Charter Arms .44 Bulldog: Back in the 80's, Charter touted their "unbreakable copper beryllium firing pin". I fired this one 3 or 4 hundred rounds, dry fired probably half as much. One day I went to shoot it and just got a click and a little puff of deodorant dust from where I had been carrying it inside my waistband with my shirttail out (Bubba). So, I pushed the thumb latch to the rear with the cylinder opened and tripped the hammer forward to get a look at the firing pin. You got it, broken, so off to the factory. They fixed it, but I lost confidence in it after that so I sold it. (I think the new ones are pretty good.)

3. Ithaca 37 shotgun: I used this with no problem for several years, but it got to where it would lock up after firing. It wouldn't happen every time, but it seemed to happen a lot when I needed a second shot at a rabbit or a dove. It wrote the factory and they were familiar with the problem, it had something to do, over time, with the barrel threads not mating with the receiver. They fixed it. Also, I made the mistake of putting a Poly-Choke on it (remember those?). I was constantly fiddling with it, especially while dove hunting; two or three would come by high - screw it down tight; the next one would be down around 20 yards and now I'm trying to hit that little rocket with a teacup-diameter charge of 8's. Also after a while, instead of getting used to the pill bottle on the end of the barrel like everyone else apparently can, I got to where it was bothering me more and more.........just a blob out there. A buddy had been wanting the whole outfit so I let him have it.

That's some of mine. What have you got? :ow:

I had a Llama 1911-style ten or more years ago. It had a plastic housing for the thumb safety/slide release plungers. Gone quick.

When I was a deputy I bought an AMT Backup .380 that was a POS. I think it lasted about two months and it was gone. But not before I shot a girlfriend's TV with it. :) Right in the screen. And it still worked after that.

Other than those two, I've been very fortunate to own lots of really good ones over the last 30 years.

I had a 100 dollar Llama 1911. Traded it for a Smith 10. Dat felt good. Sold a Super Blackhawk that I didn't mis for at least 20 years. I wonder how my life woulda turned out if I'd a kept it every now and then.

'Slick, them factory 20 Rd. Mini mags is available now. Only 30 bucks plus shippin' or tax. That's cheap once adjusted for inflation. I was payin' 20 in da early 80s. A real Fudd only needs him dat 20 dollar 5 rounder.

Damn thing was less than 6 months old when it started firing both barrels with 1 trigger pull. Weatherby's attitude about making the repair made it even worse.

Nothing wrong with it, but I had a High Standard .22 semi-auto that I used for Bullseye competition. I sold it to buy a Benelli and never missed it.

Sold a Mossberg .243 rifle and bought a Ruger MKII .243. Never missed that Mossberg. Wouldn't hurt my feelin's none if somebody gave me another one, though. :)

Sold a S&W 66 and turned it into a fixed-sight GP-100 which my brother made into an adjustable sight GP-100. Haven't missed that one.

Made a couple other trades - didn't miss the blued .300 Wby I traded in on the SS .300 Wby. Didn't miss the blued 7-1/2" SBH I traded for the SS 10" SBH.

I don't miss the Winchester plain-barrel pump with WinChoke that I traded for a Ted Williams equivalent with vent-rib and Polychoke. Now I'm not sayin' I got the best of that deal, but It made more sense for me at the time. I hardly ever shoot shotgun anyway.

- CZ Bobwhite. Bought it new and found rust between the barrels. Couldn't hit with it either.

- Romanian AK. Only accurate rifles are interesting.

Walther PPK 380. SLide bite real bad

HK P7M8. I know it is heresy but it was really heavy only held 8 rounds. (thought the trigger was nice.

Beretta bobcat 22lr Horible trigger. could not hit the side of a barn with it (user error)

Walther PPK .32 blue: had to try this again after watching a bond weekend on TBS. (bad slide bite)

Kel tec P11: horrible trigger

Ruger MK II gov model. Really heavy and a pain to clean

Walther PPK .32 SS Had to try it again during my walther collecting frenzy.

Walther P5 . nice trigger very smooth gun. only hold 8 and is the size of a G19

Sig Trailside Target pistol: very nice but the nickel plating kept coming off.

G19 the palm swell was in the precisely the wrong location.

Walther P88: Really well made gun however it did not do anything that my walther P99 could not do.

FNH FAL Steyr stg58: really great gun easy to clean way chep magazines. Way heavy and not as accurate as I wanted. Scope mount options not ideal.

I think the only guns I have sold that I regret today is...
1. a Beretta tomcat .32 SS that I gave to my brother for a birthday present.
2. a H&K P9S target in 9mm. best recoil and trigger on any gun I have ever fired.
3. My first Glock I ever owned. Gave to my dad for his birthday. ( I will get it back someday but I do not want that either)
4. S&W 3913: Great little 22LR. supper nice trigger. really very accurate. Wish I had to to get my wife started shooting.

Colt Delta Elite 10mm (early one. Virtually no loading data or components at the time, spare mags impossible to come by, just didn't fit my hands)

Ruger P85 (Won it at an SOF three gun match)

S&W 5906 (nothing really wrong with it, just not into stainless)

My first gun ever was a Llama 1911 Large Frame 9mm. Sold it before the AWB went into effect so I could have a large capacity P89 Ruger 9mm. I kept the Llama clean but it was still very finiky with ammo and FTF and FTE were very common. Glad to get rid of it but I've only fired the Ruger a few times since I've owned it. I think I only bought it because the government said I couldn't own it after a certain date.

* My old Clinton era Bushy. It had no bayonet lug, even though I don't have a bayonet for it. but mostly cuz it was a fixed handle/rear site and a welded on muzzle brake, and therefore could put a rail on it.

* Beretta 92 Vertec. I could put nightsites on it (which was easy enough, and thought I liked the slimmer grip but just couldn't get used to it or the decocker on the slide.

*H&K USP 45. Fine shooter (nothing special in accuracy with my particular one), but with hi cap mags at $200.00 during the Clinton ban, and that only being 2 extra rounds, and post pan mags at $60.00, I don't feel bad about parting with it.

*Kahr PM-9. Started getting some barrel peening at 400 rounds, Customer Service was crap at that particular time. Found my G-19 was more comforting to carry CCW than the Kahr. I'd get another if they weren't so damn expensive as I hear the barrel peening issues have been delt with.

I've kept everything else as I've always researched a particular gun I'd want then wait for a good deal to surface.

Ishapore Enfield that had a long chamber.
The AK's that wouldn't hold 6" groups at 50 yards.
That one jammomatic G27 that I could never get to lock up.
The AWB bushmaster AR.
All the guns Chewy bought on impulse.

I bought an AMT backup .40 awhile back... Big mistake! That thing ate recoil springs like there was no tomorrow. It would shoot OK for a mag or two, then all of a sudden jam up and quit feeding every time. Not to mention it launched brass straight back at my head :ack2: After three trips to High Standard (luckily right here in Houston), I gave up and dumped it at a gun show. I am much happier without it :yesnod:

My Marlin Model 60 I would love to cut into little pieces with det cord, but it was a gift from my stepdad who has since passed. If it didn't have such sentimental value I would so enjoy taking my anger out on that jamming POS.

MONTEGOD7SS

Hell no, I won't pay shipping to send that thing back. I have a J.C. Higgins Model 31 that is awesome and is as reliable as the sun. It also has that neat little sling integrated into the stock that everyone seems to like. My Model 60 will probably never have another round through it unless it's something I let my little girl start shooting. She has shot my Model 31 some, and even at 5yr old seems to enjoy it.

My first gun was a Marlin model 60. It was always troublesome. Don't shoot it no mo. Still have it out in the garage somewhere. Paid $10 for it (1988 dollars). Hopefully Obamer will buy it from me for $100 or so to make the world safe.

Wow. Stay away from the PPKs.I inherited my wife's PPK-S when we bought her a Kel-Tec .380. Easy to keep clean and have never had problems with it although we've only shot it 8-10 times. Fits right in the pocket. I like it a lot.

If it didn't have such sentimental value I would so enjoy taking my anger out on that jamming POS.I had one that I bought new with a scope. I hated that thing and eventually traded it for a wood cookstove. I often wondered if the jamming was caused by the cheap Wal-Mart ammo ?:28:

All I can offer is my personal experience which has been horrible. I have tried so many kinds of ammo that it can't be that, and the thing still is basically a single shot. From what I understand there are more of those than any .22 rifle ever made, going on 12 Million of them, so surely not everyone has the same experience as me. My 50yr old J.C. Higgins will empty the 17rd tube mag as quick as you can squeeze the trigger with any round nose ammo you have in it. It does choke with truncated bullets, but I'm alright with that cuz I mainly shoot Federal bulk pack which makes it run like a sewing machine.

Higgins similar to yours but it has mags instead of a tube fed system. I wish I could buy replacement mags for it because it preforms like a champ. On the side of the barrel it says: Savage Arms Co. Chicopee, MA. and something about Sears and Robucks on it. Twice the gun my Marlin 60 was.

Mine is also a Sears gun and took me awhile to figure out exactly what model it was. I downloaded the .pdf of the original owners manual just so I would know how to take it down and clean it. So far it has been 100% reliable and the sling in the stock is the neatest thing I have seen on a rifle.

I prefer tube mags or I would have definitely bought a 10/22 instead of my J.C. Higgins. This is identical to the one I have minus the scope. On rabbit guns I prefer open sights because I can get a wider sight picture and "walk" the rounds to it.

I had one that ran more-or-less like clockwork until it didn't. I suspect that the problem is related to the easily bent spring that ejects spent cases.

Once I bent it, my happy days were over. I wound up selling the gun before replacing the spring, but have helped someone else replace a broken one successfully.

I actually kind of wish I had hung on to it. It shot pretty well and was worth what I sold it for. The .22 that I replaced it with cost me three times as much and shot half as well. It is gone too.

I've got a Marlin Model 70, the mag fed version of the 60. Its fairly reliable. Sometimes the mag hangs a little low due to wear and it won't pick up the next round. If you hold it with your palm, its 100% reliable. Not very accurate though, but I've only used bulk pack ammo. I have issues with spending as much on 22s as I do on 9s.

S&W M&P in 40 S&W. The trigger was horrendous. I even had a trigger job done, and it still sucked. Not very accurate either. Even after playing with the different grip inserts, it always felt to long and narrow. I sold it and bought a Sig 226 in 40. Not as much mag capacity, but far better accuracy and fit.
