Ok, I've been reading for 6 months how a zinc ww can "Charlie" up your melt. I found out first hand this afternoon while trying to smelt and reload at the same time. I guess I lost track of time and when I checked my pot I had nothing but clips and the nastiest purplish plasticy/lumpy mess I'd ever seen. I usually keep a pretty close eye on what goes in and if one gets missed I've always had plenty of time to scoop up the offending floater and discard. I tried skimming it off, boy did that work! Looked like little crystals swirling up under the melt.:incazzato:
Lesson learned.

try smelting a giant piece of what you thought to be a usable babbit only to figure out (too late) that it was a big assed hunk of zomething Zinc:

It was about 10lbs of the alley lead. My propane tank is down to fumes and I's trying to finish it off with just a few pounds before trading my tank in. Made me some nice zinc McMuffins though. I think I'll take em to the recycling place the next load of wire I haul off. May get $5 for em as lead.
Still got the motherload though.

:iagree:
If you fish, get some sinker molds! I havent bought a sinker in years!
I use do-it sinker molds, and they work very well.
