I have been a negative nancy towards AR's even in my servicce days. but recently I have thought about building one "cause I dont trust the gobment" so here is the million dollar question.
how can I build the cheapist yet the most reliable AR ?
weres the best place as far as prices for the lower reciever?
weres the best place as far as uppers?
what about the fancy internals that make them work better.'
should I get a funky caliber?
or stick with 223?
Keep in mind that my experience's with AR's is not good but I am willing to give it another chance.
thanks for all of the input

I think DelTon makes kits.
The recommendations made to me are build the lower, then buy an upper and get experience swaping parts out. Then when you are comfy enough with the upper, build one.
If you want to do it GP style and roll your own 100%, go for it.
Stag has been noted as being a good lower. CMMG has good uppers, I like mine.
Uppers and parts are crazy everywhere. Bravo Company, DPMS, Bushy, Armalite, RRA, Stag, Lewis, few smaller shops.
223 is plentiful and cheap to shoot. Also what works best in the AR system. If I went exotic, I'd go 6.8SPC.
I think the reliability comes with the quality of the parts purchased and the understanding of how they fit and interact.
<<< Not an AR guru.

My build started with a Krieger 1n9 twist barrel.
I went with a complete Olympic arms lower because it had a decent (do-able) single stage trigger. Everything else came together nicely Its a true tack driver.

I think the way to "cheap and good" is through knowledge. If you will put in the effort to become very familiar with the Direct Impingement system, one can pick through the hype and find parts that will work great for less money. But , you will need to be able to discern the difference between a good piece and a bad piece.
In my opinion all AR's are parts guns, and the reliability comes from HOW all the parts work together. That is dependent on the builder more than the parts

Well, you are definitely a nancy.:rofl:
If you have to have one it should shoot 6.8 SPC. You need another round to reload.

I'd say get a 223 or a 308 caliber. Skip all the other fancy calibers.
How long ago did you serve? Were you in 'nam? If so, please rest assured that the m4 and the like much better than the first go round of ARs.
If you want just a blaster to keep you and yours safe in the event of another Huricane Katrina, any of the Del-Ton kits and CMMG setups will do well.
If you want a tack driver, talk to Reno!
Cheap and Reliable don't get along in pretty much every circumstance in life.
You will save money right off the bat by ordering your AR in separate upper and lower configuration rather than complete. Reason is the .gov charges manufacturers a 11% tax on complete firearms, they pass that on to us.
If you want good parts, stay away from the gun shows. Every time I go to one, every dealer thinks what they have is ordained by God himself. You never know what you are getting from those guys. Sorry to the good guys that go to those shows, but a few bad apples, ruin the rest.
You state that your experience is not good with ARs, then don't set yourself up to fail. Buy from a reputable source. I tell most of my friends who want to get into ARs to just order a complete lower from bushmaster or Rock River, ship it directly from them to your FFL. At least then you know you have a factory lower with their parts and it will work properly. Then just buy an upper from either of those two shipped to your house. If you want the M4 style, get a LMT from a sponsor on AR15.com They have LMT uppers with the 14.5" barrel and perm. flash suppressor on them. If you don't want the perm. FS, order the 16" then. LMT is the latest and greatest as of right now. They make their uppers for groups of the .mil so they are reliable and built to mil-spec standards.

CREOPHUS, no i wasnt in NAM, served from 1998-2003. but the experience that i had with them during the time wasnt the best. but my every day gun was a M240, copter gunner. when i got out i got a Bushmaster that was my dads duty rifle. he hardly ever shot it. when i took owner ship of it i thought that it would be great. but had nothing but feeding and jamming issues.
i would like to possibly build one but am leaning towards tacking out my Mini 14.
any suggestions would be great

I have a Mini-14 that shot 3" to 5" groups out of the box, and now with a few inexpensive mods (and a worked-up handload) is an honest 1.5" rifle. You may know this, but there is a Mini-14 forum on the PerfectUnion site. Lotsa good info there. Let me know if you're interested in what worked for me.
BTW, build the black rifle anyway. I have 2 complete and planning to put together a third. Since the Mini is my go-to walkin' rifle, my AR's are heavy barreled for longer range work.

Could magazines be the problem for your dads rifle having feeding issues? I'll bet a little attention to that rifle would have it running very well. Maybe the extractor needs to be replaced or something?
I feel kinda silly suggesting things to get the AR running properly to a service man!:blush5:

I tried every mag out there, extractor had been replaced several times. i was told by a gun smith that the ramp needed to be polished, "thought that was strange" or to send it back to bushmaster.
i tried everything that i knew and finally just gave up.
sold it to an army buddy, he basically used it for parts..
