Could they be getting banged up on the way out of the chamber?

They're getting slammed by the bolt or hitting the port on the way out, the neck looks like a way short chamber to me.
Prolly a Mini 14

How much does a mini-30 cost compared to an AK?

Friend of mine had a similar thing from his SKS. Chamber was oversized. The neck on the first case broke off and stuck in the chamber. Next round jammed in through the case neck and it fired. Eventually another neck broke off and the whole darn thing locked up tight when the next round tried to chamber. This was with brass cases. The problem didn't appear with steel cases. He sold it as a project gun.

Looks kinda' like they were ejectin' a might bit too soon when the pressure was still way too high possibly. Then again, probably a chamber size issue. Then again some one may have been trying to "witch" the gun owner. Eeeyaa'.

By law in Russia all military caliber firearms have to have the chamber necks shaped like that to show the difference between non-military and military cases or cases fired in non-military and military chambers. It's Russian law. Those were fired in a Saiga or a Vepr.

DC is right about that, which is something I didn't know. Check out the second post in this forum from Jippo:

That is the way the chamber is cut... I gots a pile of them myself I picked up at Fish & Game.
I am thinking I will use some lead bullets I cast some 18yr ago and re-form them to my std AK chamber, then carry on with processing the cases as usual.

The Saigas I've shot were all stock an' had triggers so bad they made a "normal" non Century FCG seem like a Remington BDL in comparison. You should see the looks on the Saiga boys when they havin' trouble when we tryin' to zero their Saigas, an' their groups just suck. I end up taking the wheel an' we get it done. But when I tell 'em they need to do the mod an' at least get a G2 in it, they get all kinda sad an boogerfooed. Then I hand 'em a SLR95 or MAK with the stock FCG an' say "Try a mag with this". They get all happy, an' shootin' good, an' hand the AK back an' say something like "that trigger's great, I LIKE that!" I tell em, no it's not, it's **** actually, but it's aight, it's an AK an' I like it...But you still should mod your SAIGA an' do the G2 an' a pistol grip. They never do... They got their one or 2 raggy assed botched up "modified to work inna Saiga" mags an whatever goofy lowcap SAIGA mag that came with the gun too. Sad...
But now, knowin' they brass killers, I really gonna look on 'em wid extra disgust. I never looked at an ejected steel case, closest I get is every now an' then I rake 'em sometimes up so my desert wash range under the Ironwood trees at Mullah U. stays looking good. I'm gonna pick me up some hot ones an' reconnoiter next time I got some SAIGA boys out. Thanks Washington,D.C. an' Capt. Toyota!
