View Full Version : Sportsman's Warehouse Canadian owned

A large chain of sporting goods stores up here called Wholesale Sports of Canada was bought out by the UFA (United Farmers Association) this summer. It looks like they have now just purchased the Sportsman's Warehouse chain as well. Don't think that makes any difference for us up here.

So are you implying that what we down here in the States have to look forward to is 1/2 the store devoted to hockey equipment, 3/4 of what's left devoted to fishing, 3/4 of what's left devoted to clothing, and the remainder (1/32) to things possibly related to firearms?
And then a "good" day at SW will be when both guns are in stock? :skep:

Most Canadians are good at hockey.

Oh - I forgot the "eh" stereotype. Fit it in wherever you think best, eh.

Actually, the Original Wholesale Sports has one of the largest firearms inventories in Canada. they also have fishing and camping gear (no hockey equipment though!).
When UFA took over Wholesale, there were no real changes made, not even to staff. It's still the same old place, just different ownership.

I do believe they made all the staff grow mullets though.

That may be. Living in Western Montana has granted me the opportunity to converse with quite a few people from Alberta (CRAZY drivers!) and British Columbia. I couldn't begin to give you a breakdown of "who was from where" but a noticeable number tended to lean toward "aboot" rather than "about".
Maybe it was an affectation designed to make fun of us ignernt colonists.... :skep:

No, no. Alberta has TERRIBLE drivers. Keeebec has the crazy drivers.

I never drove in Quebec, but did notice a rather cavalier attitude toward traffic laws and safety in general when I visited there once.
We get a lot of Albertans headed......somewhere. Wherever they're going must be a long ways away and really important, 'cause it seems like they're always in a BIG hurry to get there.
I think somebody musta' published an erroneous km-miles conversion table and they all think they gotta' do 180 km/hr to go 65. :D

You mean you don't? And aren't those signs just suggested speeds?

I spent two weeks in Quebec thinning out the fish population and had a blast. Private lake that you could catch em with a net it seemed like. As a matter of fact after the first day we never even used bait, just a gold Eagle Claw hook and caught so many every day we bought sunk the boat. There were 52 of us there (all family) and caught/cleaned/eat several hundreds pounds worth every day for eating. Man I wanna go back!

Oh, I think they got the kilometer to miles conversion table correct but forgot to take into account the difference between metric hours and English hours. Trying to get all that distance covered in one of those smaller metric hours means really having to keep the speed up.

Actually, up here we measure distance in hours, as in : How far is it to the border? About three hours.

Yabbut you guys are so high up in the latitudes that the hours are shorter. So 3 hours in Canuckia is like 20 miles. 3 hours in Texas is like 2,000 miles.

Well, I'm pretty close to MSO and they got a Famous Dave's, which I've never been to and I'm pretty sure all the 'cue purists here would denounce as something less desirable than wet cardboard when it comes to human consumption.
Cow Town + Flames = 'Cue
I'm playin' stupid here, y'know. Unlike all those times when I'm not playin'.
Frosty - I want to sort of apologize for my stereotypical characterization of Albertans - I'm sure at least one of you isn't an insane driver. :D

No apology need JL. Go to Lethbridge and had north about 1-1/2hrs.

Oh yeah, both of them. Used to be every other plate in the parking lot on the weekends was either from BC or Alberta. When the exchange rate went to hell for you guys the traffic slowed to a trickle except for this time of year, those were the good old days.

Add the fact that we can't take anything across the border other than slings, holsters and reloading equipment (not components), it doesn't make the trip worthwhile.
JL, if you still haven't figgered out where I am, google "Greatest outdoor show on earth".

Like I said - I was just PLAYING stupid. "Cow Town" and "Flames" were pretty blatant clues. Plus, the YYC clue was why I responded with MSO.
It's just been a long time since I been there.

That's the way they measure distance in LA too, only there 3 hours might mean 22 miles.

You guys can't even take components back with you? I know BC would nail you for GST and all the provincial taxes (depending on how long you were down here) Can you pay duty and still import?
Frostback
12-15-2008, 06:42 AM
No components. If DHS catches you trying to leave the USA with so much as a bullet or primer you'll be leaving behind your vehicle as well and spend some time in a damp dark place. Our guys don't give a red rat's arse about what components we bring back but your guys do. Anything shotgun and most other rifle and handgun parts are a no go as well, unless you have managed to procure an export permit first, and even then there are things we just can't get.

That really bites on the components. If Canadian customs doesn't care why should the US? How would they even know unless you guys got searched? Sheet, it's easier to get BC Bud back into the states (not that I've tried)

DHS seems terrified that US made components will be used against yer own troops in far away places. Canadian vehicles are searched at random when leaving the US. Chances are you won't get searched, but if it does happen, Doom on you and whoever sold you the stuff.

They should spend more time keeping the camel jockeys out than ammo and components (sorry, Mullah and Achmed Koski)
