View Full Version : Slide Racker for MKIII
Steve Koski

My 10 year old son wants to shoot this gun in competitions, but he can't rack it if the hammer is down. It is fairly stiff, even my wife has a bit of trouble. Solution - Add a slide racker so he can get a better grip on the bolt.
The slide rackers already in production don't work for the MKIII (I asked). So, I'm thinking that machining up some basic shape for a slide racker and drilling/tapping the bolt should do the trick. Here's the rub: I'm no machinist. I'm not even a machinist's mate third class.
I dont mind paying for someone's time & troubles. I can mail you the bolt and you can go nuts on it.

Here's the raw gun with the bolt closed.

Here it is with the bolt open, top view. There's a fair ammount of "meat" on the back of the bolt.

Here is a link to the MKII bolt racker - that won't work with the MKIII.

If no one else can take care of you, I know a few machinists and have access to full scale machine shops. Be after the first of the year before I can even think about it though.

Sell it and get a MkII cuz loaded chamber indicators reside in the 7th layer of Hell alongside S&W locks.

Does he holster the gun? Just wondering how far the "racker" could stick out.
Im sure I could do that, You want aluminum, stainless?? Just bolted to the rear of the "bolt"

Koski, what about using a piece from a countertop connecting bolt?
http://www.cabinetmart.com/69-1420312.html
Then drill and tap for a small bolt.
That would be an easy, DIY project. When he gets old enough or you get tired of it, just unscrew it. You'll be left with a hole, but you'll get over it.

Adam,
Thanks much!
He will holster the gun in an Uncle Mike's kydex holster that doesn't hold the gun very snugly to the body. I'm not concerned about the extra width.
I imagine it should be reasonably light to keep from changing the weight of the bolt too much. Aluminum? I suppose there is some risk of it breaking after cycling a half a jillion times. Whatever material you think is best.

I'd go 304 Stainless or another stainless alloy if you don't have any 304 on hand...

Steve, why won't the MK II racker fit the MK III ?
Aren't the bolts the same size in the "wing" arera ?
They sure look to be similar.

Unk,
Apparently the angles are different and the Power Custom MKII bolt racker DOES NOT work with the MKIII bolt. Several websites selling the Power Custom racker said this and...
A GP lurker emailed me and said he tried it - no go. He did say that one solution is to put a MKII bolt (with or without racker, I don't recall) in the MKIII, and either machine the extra notches in the bolt to accomodate the MKIII LCI, or remove the LCI parts from the MKIII receiver.

The first rendition lookled like this.

He was a little worried about any extra weight causing problems so I put the nice sculpted model on a serious diet and cut/milled off anything I could and added a few lightening holes, ending up with this.

What is the weight of the addition as manufactured?
AdamN
12-26-2008, 03:53 PM
Its made from 7075 alum, was close to 20 grams, which was about 15% of the stripped bolt weight.
After I lightened it up it was 10 grams, about 8% of the stripped bolt, hopefully not enough to matter.

If Koski runs into problems, he'll just have to put a suppressor on the pistol to increase the back pressure.

Man ANeat, dat is one cool lookin piece a work right there
8% won't make any difference at all with any brick ammo, maybe with a Colibri, but even then prolly not.
I bet that lil piece can be polished out real nice an it a look factory as can be.
Custom for sure ;)

I didnt have a whole lot of time to try and dream anything up. Basicly that is what Steve wanted, and if he decides to take it off the two small holes wont be an issue. You could always put in a couple of stainless allen head screws to fill the holes.
I think cutting a dovetail and using a one sided racker like on a 1911 would be another option but might be more of an issue with it removed.
Ive made a few like this in the past and Brownells sells this one that fits a standard dovetail.

Graphite in the G20 instead of oil.
Tested at -15*F, I quit before the gun wanted to.
10MM makes a real sharp "KRACK"! at that temp. Echos real nice.

If the original design doesn't work, I would suggest cutting a dove tail on the back of the bolt and installing a similar piece to the shown, however, I would have an actuator on both sides. This will require some machine work, the piece will have to be turned from round stock and then milled, but it presents a lighter solution in the event the original does not work.

Let us know how it shoots with the extra weight on the bolt. I can't imagine something that lightweight having any effect, but I am curious.
I have a MKIII that prolly needs the same thing done to it for when youngins go with me ta shoot. Mine loosened up some after a couple bricks, but a couple a nephrews still have some problem wit it
Especially cool dat ya can fill da holes wit a allen screw if ya don't need da racker.
Hella cool if ya ask me, look good too

Well good; I was getting a little worried about it getting lost. Im glad he can work it. Id say a little bead blast and some black bake on finish wouldnt hurt it but I would shoot the heck out of it as is

Most of my guns are "working guns." The finish is actually a lot smoother/better than those pictures show. The camera flash seems to bring out every tool mark.
We're going to shoot it in Phoenix in a couple days. I'll let ya know what happens.
Thanks again Adam!
