I want to duplicate M193 loads to train with, and was wondering what the fastest powder (rifle for ya jokers out there:supergrin:) is when using a 55 grain round?

I am looking to make 3150 out of a 16" barrel, and all I have found that will do it is 28 grains of 748, at least according to the book.

So, before I buy 8 pounds of it, are there any other options?

I presume you mean what propellant will get the highest velocity possible from your gun with a 55-gr FMJ, not simply what is the fastest powder.

The Sierra Manual has a completely different section on the .223 Remington when loading for the AR-15. Many load manuals don't make that distinction, but you might want to look at the Sierra manual.

How are you going to start working up toward the velocity you hope to get? Do you have a chronograph available? Are you absolutely sure your factory load is doing 3150-fps from your rifle?

At this point, I am looking at what my current speer manual says, and for a 24 inch barrel, I am looking at 3313fps at 28 grains compressed with a CCI 450 primer.

With a 16" barrel, I want to see 3150 or so.

I have not bought a chronograph yet, but will soon (around the 1st)...

And yes, LC 193 is clocking 3100 through a friends chronograph.

If you want to replicate M193 that is chronographing at 3100, may I ask why you want to strive for 3150? I'm not discouraging you from safely working up toward that goal, I simply want to know why you want to go faster than M193.

Sometimes, an extra 50-fps more than an already (near) MAX load can be unachieveable or even dangerous. From an AR platform, I wouldn't want to try to squeeze another 50-fps out of it.

Buy a pound, work up some loads. If it fits your needs, buy a couple kegs.

Plenty of M193 wanna be loads listed in the reloading section of ar15.com. Guys over there are getting 3,000 + fps with their loads.

ETA: Most guys over there get that velocity with 24 to 25gr of H335 or WC844.

Blue Dot is the fastest powder I have used in .223.

Did someone say something about j okers?

There's a load at reloadersnest.com using Blue Dot in 223. I think with a 40-50gr bullet.

The best I've found is 26.5 grains of AA-2460, 55 grain FMJ and Remington 7 1/2 or CCI#41 primers. CCI-450 primers can be used also. This powder gives the velocity with less pressure than H-335 and AA-2230. AA-2460 used to be imported from Israel but I think current lots are Czech made. Some AA powders are imported from China but I think that's only the extruded powders not the ball powders.
