Just curious.....The .45acp loads I'm making are VERY accurate but they are producing a ton of smoke......

5.0 grn W231 with 230 LRN and Remington 2 1/2 Large pistol primers.

Any ideas????

Thanks Frank

Solo 1000 has the least amount of smoke with Lead. It even has less when used with Jackted. But your lube is also likely to blame. What are you using?

I'm not for sure what kind of lube is on the bullet. These are bullets I purchased at local shooting supply......home brew from a local guy he sells for. It appears to be clear/blueish in color....after loading I wipe off the excess lube on case and bullet

It's probably the lube causing the smoke. Not your powder or your load recipe or your technique.

Smokeless powder it, well, pretty much smokeless. :)

Try wiping the base of the boolit with gunscrubber. I sometimes lay an old T shirt flat on my reloading bench and spray a section then wipe the boolits base accross the solvent.

The powder interacts with the lead causing the smoke. There is a difference even with jacketed. My friend doubted me as well but I asked him to watch two batchs of Solo vs Titegroup and it was noticable. Pure lead bullets most the smoke comes from the lube.

I use Lars Red Lube,a nd it does smoke quite a bit with Unique. I tried the Lyman lube and there was less smoke, but the bullets are really sticky.

Lar's red and Solo 1000 produce very little smoke, similar to FMJs. Very nice.

+ quite a few Dan.

I really like Solo 1000 with lead or jacketed. It has not made any difference in lube types that I have used. I don't cast, but I bought some of Freak's 230's when he was selling them, and they were lubed with Lar's I believe. Some others I have tried were lubed with some blue stuff that I have no idea on, and one other type I have tried had some brownish-yellow lube that I think might have been alox-beeswax or something similar. Solo 1000 was good with all of them.

I have found TG to be very lead-unfriendly as far as smoke goes. The only other powder I have tried in 45 ACP is Power Pistol, and it was alright as far as smoke, but nowhere near Solo. Solo seemed to leave less residue inside and out of my gun too, making cleanup a little easier. Dan turned me onto this powder, and it has worked pretty well for me. Now I gotta get some Sillhouette to try in 9mm.
