I live about 1 mile from the Santa Fe railroad East/West bound, my folks live a bout 2 blocks from the Rail Road....mostly see Santa Fe railroad (North/south bound)bit others may frequent I'm sure. Anyways, I was wonderin' if any of y'all have scored lead at the Railroad yard? Aye?:sifone:
Lots of steel or iron bits... LOTS & LOTS just littering the track actually. But no lead that I can remember.

I dont think trains have wheel weights. :) I lived by railroad tracks for years and recall finding bits of metal, but no soft metals.

Hmmmm. Thoughht so. I My Anvil is actually a chunk of railroad. Works great, nice n' bouncy when ya' toss a huge ball bearin' on it. Maybe I be scopin' for a train car full of lead. Then we could pull a Ol' Western Train Job eh?
I used to find these little round balls of a dark grey rock-like stuff all over the tracks. Later I managed to look it up & it was an ore of some kind but I forget what.
Once, I came upon a stopped train that was so long that after an hour of walking we still weren't able to see the front engine. All the rail cars were locked closed with a kind of steel wire. Well we managed to work one of them off & got inside. There were brand new automobiles of all makes, stacked two high & 4 deep in each rail car. Keys left in the ignition. It was a pretty neat find. We left without damaging anything.

lead straps off the torpedos, not sure they even use them any more but a great source of lead.

Maybe they use lead ingots.. BIG lead ingots for ballast on rail cars? I've heard that is the case on some highway patrol cars.
