View Full Version : Picture Request: Unuseable cases & over-preasure signs
Hey guys, I'd like to ask some of you to post pictures showing examples of various case defects that would make them unsuitable for reloading, and pictures showing examples of over-pressure signs- (flattened or cratered primers, etc.)
As a new reloader, I see cases that I think are obvious rejects, but then there are others that are questionable & it would help to have some pictures for comparison.
Similarly, it would be helpful to know what I'm looking for when working up my first batch of reloads.

Primers are not a good indicator of pressure. For example, get a few granules of powder in the primer pocket, it will flatten the primer.
Pick up the A Square reloading manual, Any shot you want and Phil Sharpe's Complete Guide to Handloading, tell you all you want to know about pressure and more.
The former is available from Midway and the later is out of print, try Ebay or the online out or print book sellers.

I'll give you one that is often mistaken for a problem sign, near the base of the case (exp on bottleneck brass) you'll see a "stripe" about 1/8" wide running around the case. This is normal. If you see a "hair line of either dark or extra shiny" in that same ara, it's the sign of a case head about to seperate.
The real problem with "reading primers" is that there are several things totaly unrelated to pressure that can cause "pressure signs".

I found this in a box used brass I bought when I started reloading. No flash hole is a bad thing. I think this came from some floor sweepings from the PMC plant in Nevada.

This is a photo of a couple of head separations on .30-40 Krag cases. I had a bunch of them and they all occurred on the 12th firing of a particular batch of W-W Super brass with various loads. That may seem like a lot of firings, but I was shooting reduced cast bullet loads, neck-sizing only, and have loaded some other cases with reduced loads many more times than that.

WTF? What is that and what happened??? Did the case "weld" itself to the action?

Probably a case filled with Bullseye.

I pointed out that barrel to you at Bruce's shop.
Layusn1
Wrong data, the barrel was chambered in 375 Winchester, they managad to stuff a 375 JDJ load into the case. IIRC about a 50% overload

Right. If I remember right, there was a 1886 in pieces too, on the back wall behind the counter.
Someone needs to forward that pic to the Mythbusters.

Someone needs to forward that pic to the Mythbusters.
Why? So they can prove you can blow up a gun?
Hell, I'll stipulate to that.
Not just blow up a gun, but specifically the bananna peel barrel type blow-up. Although, that pic isn't really the myth they worked on (plugging up the other end of the barrel.) It's still pretty relevant I'd think.

You just ruined it for me. Is this their 230gr @ 1000 (230gr@1000) FPS load?
And why did GP turn my sentence fragment into an internet link???
:yikes:
Because you used the @ symbol it thinks it's an email address. So it's getting converted to a MailTo: link. If you click on it, it will probably bring up Outlook.
How come it did not turn your sentence fragment into an internet link? How come you're special?
I got the magic touch man. The magic touch. :smash:

Yes, but I think it was a bad batch of brass from several years ago.
funny thing about it is the DT koolaid drinkers were all accusing me of making it all up . My point was McNett needed to use +p brass in that load.
By the way, that particular lot all bulged like that in my stock G30, and no other round has, including +p
One way to confirm that would be to disassemble his load and replace the case, or to use their case with a known standard load.
