Just got my first tumbler. Chose the Lyman Turbo Pro 1200 not because of the cool name, but because it was a recogonized name and only $52 shipped to my house. Two of my many pets include a lizzard and a bird so I already have a good supply of crushed walnut shells and corn cob media for their bedding. Being a CRB, wanted to try this first before buying the high dollar "ammo reloading" corn cob media.
I filled the tumbler with corn cob media and 9mm brass and plugged it it. Holy crap was it loud. :yikes: My children couldn't hear the TV in the nest room. (No door or wall separating rooms) I had to move the Lyman out to the garage to let it run the brass. I checked it in 30 minutes and it was pretty shinny. I came back in 30 MORE minutes and it wasn't that much shiner. I think about 45 minutes and it is about the best it will get. I didn't have the liquid polisher or any fancy With average fresh fired brass, how long will the media last before it will need to be replaced?
Will the corn cob turn black eventually or should it be replaced before that happends?
I also have plenty of crushed walnut shell that I haven't tried yet.

It will start turning black. You will likely only get a clean matte finish unless you throw some NuFinish car wax in there about 15 minutes before you toss the brass in, just a cap full though. Throw in some cut up dryer sheets, maybe two sheets cut into 6 pieces each as well. That will keep down the dust and extend the life of your media.

And that is good, give 'em books make them read, "The Nick Adams Stories" by Hemingway, "The Jungle Book" Rudyard Kipling, Any thing by Robert Service.
TV it'll cross thread their heads so's they wont be screwed on right. If you gots to have the TV put a block on everythang but the Outdoor Channel.
ME, when I was young and wanted to watch TV granddad gave me a subscription to Outdoor Life and
Field and Stream, and
True Magazine, (Mom about pooped on that)
Other granddad gave me a subscription to Scientific American
I'm using walnut for my tumbler, with a bit of NuFinish it seems to last forever or until I spill it. Guess which comes first.

If you after shine just use corn cob. The walnut shells leaves a duller finish. With just corn cob I can get a mirror finish.

after several experiences I get the best results with a mix of corn and walnut (50/50) + some polish chemicals (no ammonia!!) .
let it run for about 2 hrs (in the garage is perfect).
you could get a cheap socket-timer to set for the 2 hrs on/off, works great and cheap.

I took the advice of others here and started putting a couple of cap fulls of New Finish and boy what a difference. I have the CV500 and it's very quiet but I do keep it out in the gargage when its running. I also use the dryer sheets (cut up into little pieces). I've used the same media over and over again and still cleaning just fine.

I really dont like to run my tumbler in the house. The dust has allot of lead in it.

If i had a garage, I'd run the tumbler out there... but I dont, so it runs in a closet. I just put a cover on it that keeps all the dust inside... works fine.

I tried the new finish trick with an old batch of RCBS Walnut shells tonight and WOW what a difference. The brass looks brand new!
