View Full Version : I Finally Taught My Wife Something...

...interesting! :)
When I talk about gun stuff, my wife usually gets that, "My eyes are glazing over now" look on her face, and the obligatory, "Umm hmm," to anything I say. WELL, the other day we are watching BO getting on the train, and the mass of humanity pressing in on him, and she asks, "So why doesn't he wear a bullet-proof vest like most of the other guys are wearing?"
I kick into Mr. Genius mode...
I told her that a president is not allowed to be seen wearing body armor, due to the image of not wanting to look afraid of miscreants. I also mentioned that the clothes he is wearing (along with most of the Secret Service) have a level of protection sewn into them, but you can't see it!
She actually looked at me, and EXPECTED MORE information.... which I quickly siezed and ran with!!! I explained that the clothing fibers were a version of what they make vests out of, but they are able to flex and look stylish, yet offer SOME protection against bullet and knife attacks.
She was stunned that I knew this information, and then gave me a look that most CIA wives must give their husbands during moments like this!
I was vindicated in the local media today with this article...
EXPLAINER: Answering questions about the news
Bullet-resistant clothing: How does it work?
By Juliet Lapidos
slate.com (http://slate.com/)
Q: Barack Obama wore “bulletresistant’’ clothing on Tuesday, Greg Gordon of the McClatchy-Tribune News Service reported. Is that the same thing as a bulletproof vest?
A: Not quite. The vests familiar from cop shows and news footage of SWAT teams are manufactured to be maximally effective with no consideration for how they might look under a dress shirt. It’s unclear what brand of body armor Obama sported at the inauguration, but several companies produce discreet, thinner vests that can be worn underneath clothing, inserted into an outer layer (like a coat) or woven into a shirt.
Miguel Caballero, a Colombian company, makes bullet-resistant leather jackets, polo shirts, Windbreakers, and ruffled tuxedo shirts, which range from a few hundred dollars to $7,000 in price. There is a trade-off between efficacy and subtlety since, as a rule, it’s more expensive to manufacture thin-but-reliable vests and shirts.
No soft material can provide complete security against all types of bullets or multiple hits in the same place (which is why the term bulletproof is out of vogue), but the National Institute of Justice (the Department of Justice’s research agency) has developed standards for determining to what extent a product is “resistant.” Type IIA armor, for example, should protect against a 9 mm-caliber, full-metaljacketed, round-nose bullet traveling at 373 meters per second. Type IIIA (the highest standard for a flexible, as opposed to a hard, material) protects against a 357 SIG flat-nose bullet fired at a velocity of 448 meters per second.
One of the more common fabrics used in bullet-resistant vests is Kevlar, a lightweight, synthetic fiber that’s about five times stronger than a piece of steel of the same weight. Manufacturers use very dense strands of Kevlar — 500 to 1,500 filaments per strand of yarn — and weave it into a netting. Then they cover the weave with a plastic film.
To test body armor, lab technicians coat the inside of the fabric with clay. Then they fire bullets at it. A proper bullet-resistant shirt or vest should not only stop the bullet (i.e., not tear) but also prevent a dent in the clay of more than 44 mm — a larger dent indicates a dangerously high energy transfer, which could result in fatal blunt-force trauma.

President Obama walking on Pennsylvania Avenue: It’s unclear what brand of body armor he had on, but there are less bulky options than vests.

Bolt Nut--
I am shocked and appalled to learn that you don't load your own ammo. Straight up.......NO PIE FOR YOU!
It's like this.....when Marie and I started dating in 2000, she noticed right off that I reloaded ammo and cast bullets. It would be difficult not to. As she could see I was into manly sorts of hobbies and recreation--there's nothing like hoisting a deer in your backyard sycamore tree to skin and draw to drive that lesson home--it was only natural that her pie-making instincts were re-kindled anew after lying fallow during her previous marriage. The deal closer happened right after the deer detail--I blew a tire on a rock while she and I were out after the 2nd deer, and I had that spare bolted on in about 6 minutes. All her life, she thought AAA did that stuff--'cause the men in her life (other than her deceased Dad) were clueless/helpless. Ever since, it has been a steady progression of pumpkin, lemon meringue, apple, banana cream, you name it. Life is good.
A small initial investment in The Green (RCBS), The Blue (Dillon) or The Black (Ponsness-Warren) will pay off over time a hundredfold in downrange satisfaction and dessert nutrition. No foolin'. The Orange (Lyman) can be substituted in places, but The Red Menace (Lee) will cause a question or two from time to time. Be ready for that.

Yeah... chicks dig reloaders bigtime
True fact. Chicks dig genuine maleness and what that involves and implies--that you can protect them and children, you can handle up on bizness, and be there for them when needed. Be like that, and not some mascara-wearing soft-handed quiche-eating metrosexual--and pie will happen. It can't help BUT happen!
Androgynous cityboys and feminist slide-hammers think that a generation of counter-natural consciousness-raising can undo thousands of years of hard-wired evolution......stupid freaks. "Equal" is NOT "sameness".

BoltNut's been at this for over 20 years. He don't reload, but he got the hunting and fishing and shooting thing down pat. Not to mention the handyman carpenter skills too.
His wife's a good woman, supportive and loving. I've heard her say, "he's the best husband I could ask for". Seriously.
How many men you know can be on a hunting trip on their 20th anniversary and their woman be ok with that?? I seen it with my own eyes.
He ain't reloading yet cause he still hung up on his "time" being worth money. No CRB genes I tell ya...none. That's where I come in.

He's gotta get with the "quality" aspect of reloading. Ive NEVER heard anyone say, "man I like reloading but I wish I could get my reloads to shoot as good as this factory ammo"
The cost is just a side benefit, the "quality" of the ammo is the "reason"

I have the Dillon in the garage, but I need a good bench... unlike AJ, I want something more stable then two rocks with a 2x4 balanced on it before I go to town on this stuff. :43:
Now, as far as the little woman goes... she saw something in me from day one that I'm still tryin' to figure out, but I've stopped asking, "Why me?!"
Our first date was supposed to be goin' to see George Thorogood & The Deleware Destroyers, but her night shift nursin' duties messed that up... so off to see a Star Trek movie. I didn't let that slow me down though, and by the time I asked for her hand in marriage... it was on a fishin' trip in my CJ-5 monster mudder on our favorite beach! I knew I'd found the right lady... but it gets better! Our honeymoon was over opening weekend (Thanksgiving), so the CJ-5 was packed with clothes and stuff for the honeymoon... but overflowing with hunting and fishing gear too (do you know how small a CJ-5 is???!!!). She literally rode for about 6-8 hours with her feet up on the dashboard to accomodate all that gear!
As AJ mentioned, my 20th anniversary was spent a million miles away huntin' pheasant in ND with he and my big brother.... ntm all the other anniversaries over the years spent hunting and fishing due to that holiday weekend! She aint complained once... in fact she's paid for a few of them herself.
She aint a pie maker, since she don't like to bake... but she makes up for it in cooking skills that are off the chain, and how shall I say this... other ways too {wink}.
She's on board with the relaoding stuff (heck, she took the money out of her savings account to buy it all), and I am pleased as pie to have her there in my life for as many years with her (21+) as I had without her!!!
Good times... good woman... :yesnod:

It's not much, but it was free. It has also allowed me to make lots of good ammo, so it's serving its purpose. Don't forget that you have personally benefited from the ammo that's come off it.

Ms. Pitmaster ain't too bad. She's definitely more of a CRB than I am. She met my parents a few days before we got married. Shortly after my dad said that if we get divorced they want her in the settlement.

He (Creophus) also has his own room for said bench and stuff... THAT is a good woman!!! I started off with a claim on the "extra room" when we moved into the new house... ask me who has that room now... packed with a million pounds of "someone's" crap... :yuk:
...which is why I have the horrible dilemma of trying to not only come up with a bench, but a bench that either resides in the garage (think surface of the sun 361 days a year), but able to lock it all up and leave stuff sitting out - OR - back porch (fans and window shaker A/C units) but anyone could walk in and cart themselves off with all my stuff.
What say ye? I'm all ears to whoever thinks they can solve this issue in a day or two! :)

Someone still needs learn a little about women and marriage. The correct answer is build 2 additions and make sure her's is larger. Then you might have a place to keep some stuff. In spite of the stuff in my catering room about half of that is Mary's and she thinks its valuable. I'd move all my stuff to the back porch and have a lockable unit of some kind that everything except the press could be thrown into and locked when you were done reloading. Then I'd work out something so you could eventually lock the back porch itself. Sounds like that back porch will end up being your salvation and man cave if you think it through correctly.

It is a glorified screen porch that has been fitted with the slidding vinyl panels, which allows the A/C to work in there. It is "lockable," but only to honest people. I've thought about the cabinet idea, but the other thought was to make lockable storage below the bench.
I was thinking about doing quick-bolt fasteners to sit the press on while working, and then un-bolting it when I finish and lock it inside the storage bin. So far that's about as much "security" as I can come up with. It still wouldn't keep out a serious thief, but it would be something.
Any thoughts...
