Hello,
Just getting into reloading for pistol. .32 S&W Long / .45 colt / .45ACP / 9MM / .38
What brand primers do you like to use and why do you choose them.
I've been reloading for my shotguns for years and have had good luck with Winchester 209's
Thanks in advance

I use whatever is available, If I had a picky revolver I would try to stick to Federals because thry go off a little easier.
Ive used Winchesters for years

Hey,
I'm from Wisconsin also. I mainly use CCI and Winchester because they have worked flawlessly for me so far. Been staying away from Wolf simply because I don't want to use a primer made by a manufacturer of steel cased ammo. I see no difference in actual performance between CCI and Winchester other than the color of the primer.

Lately I have been using Wolf, because it's cheap. I have only used about 15,000 of them so far, but they all went boom.

CCI: They have always worked well for me in any application and before I started buying online in quantity they were more apt to be available locally.
Winchester: 2nd pick, but they are really good primers also. Never any issues with them.
Welcome to the .32 club; I load .32 Long and am also one of the few maroons that load .32 Auto.

I use cci when I can find them, otherwise federal, winchester, remington in that order. No preference really as they all work as intended, mostly ranked by local prices.

I like Winchester and CCI for most purposes, but have been using Magtech the last couple years off an on.
They seem to be very uniform, but man, the packaging is a PITA. Not as bad as Federal, but annoying as hell

I'm not an accuracy freak so I use the ones that are handy (usually CCI or Winchester)
federal for almost everything mostly becasue they're a bit more sensitive. use cci in .223 and some 1911 loads.

CCI- for rifle - a bit tougher for high pressure loads - avoiding slam fires .
Federals - easy to ignite in soft springed pistols.
Wolf - Cheap / reliable / some say the rifle primers are match grade.

I mainly use CCI, but also have tons of Winchester primers. I buy whatever is cheaper at the time and haven't had a problem so far.

The cheapest and why? Because they are cheap. Although all I seem to buy are Winchesters. If you can save some dough up maybe you got a friend that reloads and you or some more could get together and do a group buy. The HAZMAT fee for powder and primers is about $20 bucks. Save you a little money and you'll have a nice little stockpile to boot. I highly recommend checking www.grafs.com (http://www.grafs.com) .
I just made a order from them last week and it was my first and won't be my last. I don't know why I've never ordered from them before. If you can get a Curio & Relic FFL you can also get a dealer discount at alot of places.......being a little long winded here.

I look for the boxes that have the most dust, they're usually cheaper.

I agree. Had too many problems with Winchester both Lg. pistol and small pistol. And I know of at least 4 other people that had the same problem.

I use only CCI. Why? Because it's what i bought the first time, and they've always loaded and fired perfectly. Decent price, too. But I'd feel just fine using Winchester if i needed to, based on others' advice.

I like and perfer the Wolf they always go off with my light striker spring Glocks, plus they cost less what a great deal. Tht Wolf primers also run through the Dillion 1050 perfect.

I find it interesting that most of the post in this thread relate to local pricing. I figured with the volume most of you guys shoot you would be having UPS back the trucks up at the garage door to unload supplies!

The cheapest way I've found is to buy by the skid, and have it shipped common carrier LTL to save hazmat fees from UPS.

I can't afford that many primers at once. I'm hoping that one day BoltNut and Murphy'sLaw and I can do a group buy. Gonna be a while though. I'm stocked up pretty good right now.

I base my buying 4 years out or so. The boys in MI do the same, so it makes getting a skid a bit easier.

How many fit on a skid P99 ?
Guys at my gun club been talkin about gettin 10-15 folks ta pitch in a buy primers to save on shipping an such.
I've always wanted to buy enough to get a discount, but most folks like PV or Graf's are out all the time nowadays, so I wonder if there are any deals to be had at all
Best deal I ever found local, or at Tulsa was maybe $1 off a (1000 count) box if ya buy like 5000, which is more than I'll ever use.

A lot! Figure you can get skids wrapped to about 48" high or so, skid is 40"x48" foot print, so figure about 25 sleeves per row, times about 25 stacked high, 625 sleeves of 5000. As much as I would like to tell y'all we had 3.125 million primers, we didn't have quite that many, but if you're independently wealthy, I guess it could happen. ;)
The way it works with Grafs is we all sit down and figure out what we need, al carte style, be it powder, primers, brass, bullets, tools, etc. I then give the hot chics a call at Grafs, tell them I need a skid, and to start pulling. Once they get everything together, put it on the scale, quote it through LTL, I send them a cashier's check. About a week later, the stuff arrives.
You do need a commercial address for LTL though, the semi ain't going to come to your place. We used a buds office (he owns it and didn't care what was being delivered, since he's into this stuff to the nth too.) Skid prices in the past have been between $90-$100 or so, cheaper than you would think. No damn hazmat fees either, UPS hits you from every 70 lb box (riiiiiiiiiiiight...crack must be good out there).
For those of you who don't have your C&R and a commercial account set up with Grafs, you need to do it yesterday!

Anything but Remmington so far. Remmington have been to long and a PITA to use. Federal and CCI have been 100.00% OK.

P99, how much does a skid cost?
MakeMineaP99
03-06-2009, 04:07 PM
It was $87 to ship from Grafs to me. Basically, the skid is as much as you can pile on, shipped LTL to a comm. address, no hazmat fees, just weight. Real nice when you're getting a couple cases of powder and multiple sleeves of primers. I think UPS hits you with a hazmat fee for every box, we would have had hundreds in hazmat fees doing it that way.
Grafs will give you quantity discounts and pay with a cashier's check to avoid the 3% fee.

I use winchesters mostly. I have a bunch of cci but hey give my pick up tubes for my 550 a fit and jam up. I use the cci's as replacements if I happen to crush a primer or two while loading.

Wes, I've never had a problem with CCI pistol primers. Are you running into problems with CCI rifle primers in your 550?

I haven't loaded any rifle yet, but I'm getting ready to do .223 since my son bought a Sig 556 and a DPMS AR in .223.
I've been loading for about 15 years now maybe a little more and when I started I used CCI primers and they jammed up in my pick up tubes. I called Dillon and they stated at the time that the CCI's were eliptcal in shape causing the problem and they recomended Winchesters, and sure enough, I never had a problem with Winny's
The CCI's I have are old from when I first bought them but since then I got a bunch of CCI's in white boxes (primers were in the box the same way Fed. primers are pkg, standing on their sides not flat like Win.or the other CCi's that I have,) I got them when I bought used SDB ($75.) from a guy and the primers came with all the other stuff. So I don't know how old they are but they do go bang.:2gunsfiring_v1:
I've heard that CCI resolved the issue of eliptical shaped primers years ago, I just don't use them after the experience I've had with them, plus I have so many of them now, I'm not about to buy any more of them. I'll continue to use them as replacementts for when I crush a few of the Win's. while reloading.:)

Have large stock of Federals, small stock of Winchester. Local folks do not stock CCI. Federals go Bang in all of my guns, my G21 does not like Winchesters. One brand for all makes it simple. Working on using Winchesters up in my 1911 and Para 16-40.
