Not a 100% but I think it makes a detachable mag gun a fixed gun.....Freaks got 'em.

Here's a question. What would stop someone in California from just taking that crap off their gun?

Correct. In CA law, a "fixed magazine" is defined as a magazine that requires a "tool" to remove from the receiver. A "tool" is loosely defined in the written laws and the bullet button is able to function (drop mag) with the tip of a bullet (a tool). This is legal and I see tons all over the place. I have one on my Ca legal AR. If you have a detachable magazine, you must the adhere to the CA assault weapons featureless build. This includes - no forward grip, no pistol grip, no flash hider, and some more I can't remember.

A felony and jail time I imagine. Mechanically, the bullet button could be removed in seconds, but the risk/reward is far from level. Some do take them off when shooting in neighboring free states, hn put em back on before entering CA again.
IMO, bullet buttons are an invaluable political and functional tool for law abiding CA gun enthusiasts.

That's a bullet button. A name given to the breed of magazine locks needed to make a semi auto centerfire rifle a nondetachable mag rifle so CA residents can have evil features. There are other designs but the ones pictured are the ones I use for my CA rifle builds.
Installation is a breeze. Remove the mag release by pushing in on the release button and unscrewing the release from the button. Put the release back in, put the small part of that big oval shaped part on the threaded rod. Put the spring inside the big hole and screw the screw down til it won't tighten anymore.
You can't drop a mag with your digit. Take a stick, allen wrency, bullet tip, etc and press on the center of the unit where the screw is. Mag releases. Because a tool is required to release the mag, it's a nondetachable mag.

I've resisted the temptation to buy an EBR for quite some time--this year might be the time, if one can be found at a fair price with less than 18 months' wait.
Freek--are ya still building these critters?

Freak's gonna be your best bet on getting a good price. Honestly, right now might not be the best time to get an EBR. I hear the wait times are better, but the prices are still 50% higher than they were.

I can build a basic rifle for $995 with a bullet button. I've got 6 backordered right now. I won't be making ARs on any sort of normal basis in the future. I'm selling casting stuff, reloading stuff, and most everything else and I'm getting a mill and some forgings to machine my own lowers in house. If someone wants a rifle I can build it. Looking at 2-3 months to get the parts and a day to build.

Oh, lordy.......lemme get the boat's annual refit and insurance handled, and there could be an EBR in my future. Mid-year sounds about right, after the lakes start getting crowded.

Oh man, that just ain't right. As if the non law abiding folks would give a rat about complying with that.............
Only California politicians could dream that up (to be shared with the rest of the nation at some point in the future)

It does sound like a sane answer to an impossibly insane law.
Legislative gnomes lie awake at night thinking up this crap, the laws, not the work-around.
Is there a bridge somewhere that has Trolls that need to be fed? I nominate the legislative gnomes as fodder.

I heard a good quote from Margaret Thatcher a few days ago: The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Reminds me of a politician you said 50 cal rifles have no need to be in the hands of private citizens. She started babbling about it's use of heat seeking projectiles. <- talk about clueless.
Remember the clueless hippies sighing the petition to band hydrogen dioxide?
They effectively wanted to band -wait for it- WATER!!!
