I've never given this much thought; I've just always looked to XTP for my killin' things bullet.

Does anybody know how the 230 grain .45 Zero JHP compares to the 230 grain .45 XTP-HP in terms of expansion and penetration (go ahead and assume same or very, very similar velocity, 1,000 fps is preferable)?

XTP is designed for penetration and controlled expansion. I'd use that for hunting purposes. Good luck on getting 1000fps in .45ACP, with 230gr. bullets. Probably don't need that much velocity for any practical purpose I can think of.

It's .45 Super, and it's not for practicality. :sifone:

Sounds like a good time to sacrifice some phone books in the name of science.

I shot a few .45Supers and .450smcs through on of my G21s...just never did interest me. Seems like it'd be a decent whitetail round at close range. Dumping a little more powder into a .45 case just doesn't "ring my bell." :)

Based on my experience with the XTP and speculating that the Zero will be an inferior bullet in quality, I think that the XTP will out penetrate the Zero and be more accurate. The Zero isn't a controlled expansion bullet and thus will expand more than the XTP.

For an animal killer, I'd go XTP and never look back. I use them in 10mm and 45.
