When I wa at Perry last year, I picked out a nice Dane return field grade M-1 with a VAR barrel and lock bar rear sight. I think the best deals are had by buying the metal and not the wood. The M-1 I picked up had a stupid Dane stock but I figured what the heck. I took the rifle to the Navy Van and they fixed me up with a mighty fine trigger.

The problem: I shot this rifle during a rifle clinic I was helping with and found the receiver moved in the stock even with trigger guard locked up.
:(

I can move the receiver in the stock by grabbing the gas cly and pushing up and down. I checked the locking pins on the trigger guard and they are round as they should be.

I've checked e-gun parts and they do have GI stocks at a fair prince. I was wondering if any one has ever dealt with E-gun parts in this area. I don't want a dog.

If I had a bit more $ in the gun fund I would just send it off the DGR and have them fit a stock.

I can but really don't want to swap stocks beteen my service grade which locks up so tight I have to use a screw driver in the trigger guard to unlock it with the Field grade and get both to lock up enough not move in the stock. I've won money and matches with the service grade so I'm not wanting to mess with it much if at all.

Thanks in advance.

I've heard that a lot of the JCG shooters will use a wood shim to tighten the lockup.
If your not shooting regestered matches with it, you could simply glass bed it.

Tailgunner, I would use a wood shims but I thought this was not JGG legal. While I have not won a JCG match at Perry I have won local ones. The best i did last year was a Bronse at Perry.

Ain't no gripes about a Bronze at Perry.
I don't shoot matchs, but I seem to have heard about the shim somewhere.
My Garand is currently on loan to a JrROTC team, and was used by 2 shooters on that team at Perry in 2007 (their coach is a friend of mine).
Have you asked about "fixing" this problem over at the CMP forums?

Sir my hat is off to you with the loaning of your rifle to a Jr. Program. No I didn't even think of the CMP forum as I sure I would get the you can always buy a Boyds from the CMP.

E-gun parts have what is supposed to be excellent used walnut USGI stocks with minor shipping dents and dings for around $50.00. What I would really like to do is send the rifle off to DGR and have them fit, finish a stock and then park the rifle with new stock metal. The reason I'm not doing this now is 1 the $ and 2 I'm not spending a lot until I figure out just how good the barrel shoots. It's a field grade VAR. I didn't expect it to last forever but....

You can pick up a replacement stock from Springfield for reasonable, but it will prolly need some finishing. I got one late last year and the fit and handywork are outstanding.

I just hafta figure out a proper finish/refinish and I'll be happy.

Locks up tight as a drum

He was nice enough to test fire it for me (I'm a bolt gun w/ optics kind of guy), and he didn't rag on me at all when he out shot me with my own rifle. We were about even on groups, as long as I was shooting his 7.62 Crane Lake Navy Match Garand (Sec Navy gave him a couple of those) and he was shooting mine, but that's as good as it got.
I located mine in a pawn shop, and got lucky with a Rock River rebuild, 63(?) Springfield barrel and Oberman (Obermeyer?) stock. He tells me the TE is in the 1-2 range and the MW is in the 2-3 range.

I was thinking more along these lines if I had the $ saved up.

Call me nuts but I like the stock.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, I think it looks sharp, also.
My bud restocked one stock for one of his shooters, IIRC it was a red/blue laminate from Boyds.

I would but overtime has been a bit thin lately. I've got a few motorcycle parts and bullets to buy.

I think blonde wood stocks are ugly, but I'm nuts for laminated stocks.

Problem is the laminated stocks are not legal for John C. Garand matches.

I'm not a big fan of pretty Garand stocks...they're supposed to dinged and dented, not shiney and perfect.

I ordered a GI walnut stock from e-gunparts. It was not quite $60.00. It's in fair shape and a Winchester to boot. I figured out what was wrong because the action was still loose in the stock. It's the flipping trigger guard. I stuck the new trigger group out of my service grade and it was tight as a drum. I'm not upset at all because the Danish stock sucked anyways.
