WOHOO!! I just got a Star lube sizer for $100 shipped sight unseen. I figured for that price I couldn't go wrong, but the guy said he will give me my money back if I'm not happy with it. I cant wait till it gets here, Now I have to cast a few thousand bullets to get ready.

Where is the best place to get dies for this? I wish my Lyman dies fit it.

Magma sells the dies, plus a couple of custom size die makers.

If anything "minor" is wrong with it Im pretty sure magma sell all the parts as well

Lathesmith on http://castboolits.gunloads.com/forumdisplay.php?f=8 will custom make your Star dies. They work great. He made one for me with (4) four holes instead of the traditional (3) three holes. Much better fill-out for this particular bullet. Charged $40.00.

He made 3 dies, punches, and nuts for me. Good turn around and quality.

Yep, I sent him an e-mail right after it posted.

The check was sent out first thing this morning.

I hope it is good, but for $100 im willing to take my chances.

The guy seems first rate, and I googled his email address and see he moves allot of gun stuff.

WOOHOO!!! It is here and it looks great. It came with two .451 dies and it looks like the two lube grooves in my 45s will line up with the holes in one of the dies.

It is currently set up to size base first which I thought was odd, but have since read that this is normal for the older machines.

Hopefully I will get a chance to play with it this weekend.

The guy who sold it to me was first rate and I wouldnt hesitate to buy anything from him again.

Hopefully that .451 die will work for ya. Thats a touch small for a lot of 45's.

Of couse you can afford to buy a die and a top punch if ya have to ;)

From what I hear thats kind of iffy, there supposed to be harder than heck, perhaps a lap, polish or something. Of course it may be alright as is. Push a bullet thru, measure.

A few guys here have had good results with .451 cast in 45acp

I'm one of those guys. My Springfield 1911 loves .451 bullets, and sometimes chokes on .452, go figure.

My Lyman has a .452 sizing die and I have no problems with my springfield 1911. I measured several bullets that I pushed through the Star this morning before leaving for work, and they do come out 0.451. I will size a few dozen to see how well they work. If I get leading from the bullet being to small, I know I have a problem, and will get a .452 sizing die.

I use a .453 die, and a softer alloy, my bullets come out just a touch over .452

Any smaller and I get just a touch of leading right past the throat.

I was out of town for several weeks and just set the sizer up and used it for the first time tonight. Wow what a speed diference. I sized and loaded a dozen or so and will shoot them on Saturday to see if I get any leading. I'm using up
Some old 50/50 for now and will probably switch to lars or jakes red and a heater later.

I couldn't get a full tube of lube in and had to break the tube in half. Is this really necessary or are thier tricks to squish the lube down?

Chris

You might want to back out the plunger all the way and see if a whole stick will fit.

Otherwise, you could go to the air feed and get a stick and about a third in it.

I can melt my lube in the microwave and pour it in and it will allow for more than a stick and a half.

Not sure how my unit (about 2 yrs old) compares with yours, they may have changed the body over the years

He has an original San Diego Star. I have found you can't get a full stick in there as cast from the the manufacturer, you have melt and recast.

Also, avoid lube with the hole down the center in the Star. If you can a bunch, melt it down and pour in the sizer, let cool and go.

If anybody comes across another $100 Star let me know because I'm familiar with a dirt poor cop that sure could use one.

Blueline, take a look on Cast Bullets, you can find deals on there from time to time.

Don't buy one on Ebay, the prices are inflated.

The 0.451 feeds great with no leading. The 50/50 is still a mess. I'm going to try some leftover jakes purple in it this week.

I hear Magma is flooded with orders for their star copy . Its almost to a point ,where people order before they cast for or shoot any pistols.
Paraphrasing one order call " I guess I need one , right ,,, and I still need a bullet mold too ? "

A guy at a local store said the Lee Precision is 6 weeks behind on orders. Reloading stuff is flying off the shelves. He was out of one of the more popular dies and can't get anymore for awhile. I don't remember if it was 9mm, .40, or .45 acp.

I found a Star on ebay and watched it hit $177 with just over two hours left on the auction. It was an older San Diego model and looked kinda rough.

The San Diego Stars often sell for more than the new ones.

Mine is an older one and for some reason I really like that it feeds the bulets base first. After using it a couple times, I could not imagine anything working being better.

I thought one of the big advantages of the Star was that it fed the bullets nose first so that no top punches are needed. I didn't realize they had older models that were base-first.

AdamN

You can actually run them either way, the speed comes from the fact that the bullets go straight thru with one bullet pushing the previous one out.

Going nose first allows you to just need one top punch that will work with most calibers.

With a top punch that fits the nose (or a flat nosed bullet I guess) you could run them base first.
