I'm still thinking on which scope to buy & I came upon a new question...

At 2-300yds, how much magnification do you need to see your hits on a paper target with .223?

40X-60X is fairly common at Perry.

How much do I NEED to see my hits? I'd like to put off the spotting scope purchase for a while if I can see my hits with 16x through my rifle scope.

Get one. It comes in handy. I take mine to the range every time even if i'm not going to do anything that would normally require it.

Why?

To save range down time due to the fat-ass-molasses-moving-duchebag that is sighting in a deer rifle with a poor scope. You know the type- bang. I can't tell where it hit. Bang. Dang, not sure where that one hit. "TIME".
Same reason i bring my staple gun and extra staples.

You could get one like this and pick up poi into the next county. (best to keep this woman behind the lens though)

Lighting angle can play hell with seeing/finding those little bitty holes at distance. I like at least 15x per 100 yards/meters of distance for the 22s.

You may not "need" a spotting scope, but it is something you will never regret having.
It makes your time at the range, much more productive, and easier (not as much time spent walking back and forth to the target).

I found me a great older Japanese Bausch an' Lomb Discoverer, not the Bushnell replacement, on the 'bay for a hunerd deelivered. 15-60x. Camera adapters available for a 1000 to 4000mm long lens...They really don't build cheaper glass like that anymore. The Chinnee could, but the cheapskate American in name only companies don't spec 'em dat way no mo'.

I got one a while back when Creo and I went to the indoor range and I couldn't see squat in that low light situation with regular small binocs... I though, "Hmmm, this is a toy I MUST have," and then I bought one! :yesnod:

Yep, and when Venus was all lit up recently in the west sky after sunset, I was able to view it... some harvest moon shots in cool weather are awesome too!

BTW, the girl behind the glass comment was funny!!!

I have a cheapy 20x Spotting Scope. It works fine at 100 yards. At 200 yards I'm guessin'. 300...forget it.

^ Thank you for that post. That helps.

As sexy as a 30x rifle scope sounds I guess I'm leaning towards the 2-16x and I'll have to get a spotting scope later.

I recently went throught the CRB skool for cheap spotting scopes, and I ended up with a Konus Konuspot 20x-60x80 for under $200. It has been compared favorably to the Kowa models used at Perry. I am still a neopyhte, but it appears to me to be a decent scope and a good bargain

Cohutt, I tell those idiots with no glass "hey, you're not going to turn on the lights, run downrange and hold up everyone to look at every shot." You shouldn't have to subsidize their ignorance & stupidity with your time/money.

I used to belong to a private range, back when I had one weekday off, and there were never people there weekdays. Mainly because it was way back where the hoot owls courted the chickens. (verbiage cleaned up here for younger readers) They had a 200 m target board and you could drive your vehicle down to the board!! :) I loved that place.

Oreo, you'll save money buy getting a good rifle scope and a decent spotting scope. DO NOT try to get a scope with so much magnification that you can see your bullet holes at x distance. Some people mount the hubble telescope on their rifle for double duty and end up with the worst of both worlds.
