I'm lookin for a few people to do a hands on gun test and give us a first hand account of your experience, likes and dislikes with a particular gun.
We've all read the gunrags that never found a gun they didn't like. That's not exactly what I'm hoping to get here. What I'm hoping to get is a candid and genuine review. If it's a great gun, say so. If it sucks, say so.
What if any mods you may have made, favorite loads etc.. how the mods have improved your shooting experience (or not) etc..
A real life honest gun review.
Think about it, who can give a better review than you ? A review about a gun by someone who paid their own hard earned cash for it, and shoots it all the time. Nobody.
I'm gonna do one on the G27 and a Springer 9mm 1911
Can any of you help out with a review of your own ?
It'll maybe help someone who hasn't dropped the cash on a new gun yet get a better understanding of what it's like from an owners standpoint.
If anyone can help out, I'll add a gun review section and as many pages as needed to the site.

I'll do one on my G20 'Slick. I can also provide a unique perspective too as I use my second finger as a trigger finger (missing index).
Lots of people think the 10mm is a real handful, but i've found several things that have helped tame it considerably even with hot loads. pops like a .45 now

Slick--
Is this focused on newer-series firearms, or older/classic pieces found on the used market? I don't own a whole lot of the former, but have a safe full of the latter.

Anything you can review. Doesn't have to be new by a long shot.
I'm not afraid to buy a 40 (or more) year old firearm, and I think a review of ANY weapon available today would be of great use.
If I had someone give me real details on some of the guns I've owned in the past before I dropped the bucks, I coulda saved a lotta bucks and headache. I've bought a lotta guns used, and plan to in the future ;) Age doesn't matter to me, and I'm sure many others. I skipped tacticool class and went right on to practical and enjoyable.
That being said, there is something about the classics from the past that just leave us in awe. A personal review of a piece of history (could be, but not necessarily a historical review) would be genuinely interesting.

Do you have a crib we have to follow or are we free to free lance?
Will these be published to the web? Specifics on formatting? PDF, .doc, ????
BigSlick
02-13-2009, 11:22 PM
PDF would be great, HTML would be great, even a Word Doc would be great, just about any common format
I'm going to try to follow the format used in many gunrags. Few pics, some narrative, some specs, maybe some load data, chrono data if ya have it, pic of a target with holes in it etc.. Mainly a 'I own this gun, here's my experience as a shooter with it' kind of approach.
I'm going to try and include the things important to anyone looking to buy one. Any FTF, FTE or other issues with it ? Best bang for the buck options, if any (in your opinion) new grip, better sights etc..
They will be published to the web

I could probably pull that off with my G22, ransom rest, factory loads, handloads, chrono, the whole ball of wax

Slick, I'm not a writer but I have a load of high end camera equipment, and I'm an inspiring gunsmith. So photo's of detail striped firearms is easy for me. I pretty much own a little of everything with firearms.
Let me know how I can help...
Oh I wouldn't mind doing the CZ 2075 RAMI in 40, Kimber Ultra II, & DW Commander bobtail, since that's been the trend in the firearms industry with conceal carry.
damn there sure is a lot i could do, 952, STIs, 646, 686, mellinium custom single stack, glock & STI race guns, and a few others. the real question is finding time. i know i'm not going to work on loads, i'll use what i've always used. i'd also need a how to on getting pics with the words. it sure would be good if we had a template to follow.
I could probably pull that off with my G22, ransom rest, factory loads, handloads, chrono, the whole ball of wax
ANeat, I'd read that Glocks, due to the elasticity of the frame, don't shoot worth a damn in a Ransom rest. Fact or BS?

Ive had good results, Glocks and Xd's both. In a Ransom rest vertical stringing is usually a sign that the gun isnt settled into the inserts yet.
Usually 10 or 20 rounds are needed before you start getting round groups. When youre getting round groups thats an indicator that your getting whatever accuracy the gun delivers.
There can be gun/load problems that will cause that as well so thats when you need a little common sense/experience
Ive been able to get repeatable results using mine, as in working up several loads, seeing the groups change as the load changes, getting similar groups when going back to loads tried earlier or in the past.
The Glocks Ive tried can usually do approx 2" at 25 yards with the right load.
Many loadings will do 3" or so which in my opinion is good for a defensive gun.
But there are loads that are really bad, and its nice to find those just to stay away from them.
My experience with a few XD's was very similar

Thanks for da help fellas ;)
How about a March 15th submission time ?
Ron, your photo skills are outstanding, I'd really appreciate the input on how to make our photos better. I got a camera dat a do almost anything (I think, it's gota lotta buttons) but I'm country dumb about gettin decent pics out of it, especially with closeup shots.
Nitesite turn in some killer photos too as does Al Packin.
Maybe with everyone workin together, we can make a great resource.

I can do a review or two for you Slick. You want them in by March 15th. I think I can do that.
I can do a Hipoint 995, a Taurus PT1911 and my M11&Lage upper. All are among the cheapest offerings in their respective categories.

That's not something you're gonna read in a gunrag
We might lose the advertising from a couple gun mfrs ( ) but, we can call a spade a spade.
I would MUCH rather have a genuinely unbiased review of a gun or product if I were looking for something to drop my hard earned cash on.

Anvil, I think doing something on the Kahr's would be great. A lot of people consider those as a less expensive carry gun option. I haven't found a whole lot of tangible info out there from an owner shooter perspective.

02-17-2009, 11:24 AM
Not yet. My associate does it in CA and when he gets caught up he's doing it for free (parts cost of course). He's got about 70 guns in his shop right now for conversions. Probably going with an ACE stock, saw grip, and Tromix rail forend. I've been working on a Pig type flash suppressor like the Noveske type. Should be pretty badazz when it's done. I wish we could have SBS in MI. I'd love to chop the barrel on this one. In order to do that I have to make it a machine gun.

If I/we move back to WI where SBS and SBR are legal, I can make it into a SBS there. Here in MI the only short barrel stuff I can do is full auto. If I convert something to full auto, I can't transfer it to myself.
I'm seriously considering forming a trust in WI and use my parent's place to store everything. That way all the cans I have can be F4'd to the trust and I can keep them there in WI where it's legal. I can F1 or F4 SBRs, SBSs, and suppressors in WI to the trust. Say I get a short upper built while in MI, when my form is approved and I go visit my folks, I can attach it to the lower and be done with it. I can have SBS and SBR in WI on a trust and shoot them when I'm there. My SOT will cover the cans while I'm in MI but Wisconsin is a free NFA state, but no CCW go figure that one. No one in Brown County, WI will sign off and since I'm a non-resident of WI, a trust/corp is the only way.
Crap, more stuff to work on. This NFA stuff is addicting. I'm building an AR AOW right now. Taking a break.

Whatever you can do a review on will help. If we get doubles, I know I wouldn't mind reading more than one review of a gun I was looking at.
Anything you guys come up with, just e-mail em to me and I'll get em up.
I've got a couple working, I just gotta run em thru the spell checker and snap some pics when I get home.
So, anything you know well or have some insight about from an owner/shooter aspect. If you have any background info, historical info etc.. that'll be great too.
I just try to think what info I would find useful when reading a review and try to include it.
