Any of you have experience replacing a non-ramped barrel with a ramped version ?

Details ?

No experience, but I might be trying it in the .45 1911 I built if nothing else simpler gets it to feed correctly. You gots to mill a slot in the frame for the ramp:

Yep, gotta mill the frame, sometimes its a good solution to an alum framed gun of a frame that has worn or been midified in the ramp area.

You also need to watch, there are different styles of ramp cuts, the barrel needs to match the frame.

Style "A" - Wilson/Nowlin

Style "B" - Para/Clark

My stuff is Wilson/Nowlin. It is slight more difficult to cut (plunge the guide rod bore to make surface flat),,, see the flat 90* ramp shelf cut.... then the simple same cut for both styles is the cut to frame for ramp to sit.

Both should come with instructions for a machinist to follow, hell I cut mine myself on a borrowed mill.

I only see one pic in CaptToyota's post.

I found another image (Clark/Para on top, Wilson/Nowlin below):

So if I understand it correctly, the little nub below the ramp on the barrel has sharp vertical corners on the wilson/nowlin and rounded ones on the para/clark? Is the ramp angle the same? Any other differences?

For some light reading, scroll down the page about 4/5 to Ramped and Unramped barrels. : http://www.schuemann.com/Content/aet4.htm

Thanks fellas

I'm gonna have a DW Commander (picked it up way cheap) cut for a ramped barrel. I am going with the Schuemann AE.

I see exactly what I was looking for in the pics you guys posted.

Only issue now is to jus get da hell over cuttin it an get on wit it.

Gonna go 10mm and want ta get 100% support, or as close as I can reasonably achieve.

Stock barrel look like it was cut wit a dremel by a drunk

Is there a reliability difference between ramped and unramped, given that both are correctly fitted?

Notice how much more case support the ramped barrel has.
That would allow loads too hot for the recoil springs.

Finally milled the frame for my Clark/Para ramped barrel. Even talked to Fred Kart on the phone about the process. A few pics:

Frame clamped to angle plate:

First (upper) slot:

http://botos.com/david/guns/1911/upper_ramp_cut.jpg

Second (lower) slot:

http://botos.com/david/guns/1911/lower_ramp_cut.jpg

Used a 0.361" carbide end mill (reground 3/8") to make both slots 0.363" wide (I had measured the lug on the barrel to be 0.362"). I used the front and outside edges of the right rail as my zeroes. Based on some additional measurements of the barrel, barrel and frame together, and a few dimensions from Fred and the Army drawing, I figured out the depths of both slots as well as how far the lower slot needed to go back towards the mag well. Made sure to check it with the barrel and slide stop before I took it off the angle plate (notice how I left that hole uncovered). Hopefully gonna finish fitting the barrel this weekend and test fire it. :patriot:

Some additional notes:

Used a 0.0005"-graduated test indicator (and a few gentle deadblow hammer taps) to line up the angle plate to the x-axis of the mill as well as to level the top of the frame. Took 0.010" deep cuts with 0.005" deep finishing cuts (I figured my unpaid time is cheaper than buying a new frame if it gets pushed out of level by trying to take too much off at once) . Coolant was typical light blue water-based stuff in a spray bottle. Spindle speed 950 rpm.

Nice work DB

I had mine done by a smith dat used ta be a machinist who worked on aircraft parts for 30 years. He did a pretty good job, it runs real nice.

Did you happen to throat the barrel too ?

Thanks.

Haven't touched the barrel yet. I've got go and no-go gages as well as standard and oversize reamers if it needs anything. :)
