Hi,
Looking to shoot 300gr around 1600 fps which is not full strength for 1895 level loads.
I've been loading n133 for my full power loads, but am looking for something:
1. Cheaper.
2. Meters well in a 550 powder measure.
3. Is at least 50% load density.
Any ideas what I should look at?
Thanks,
Alan

I second the IMR 3031,I'm getting an Avg. of 1950's over my Chrono with the Load I use. It STILL isnt a "Max" Load, but I'm Happy with it.
Lotsa Bang...Good times.

H4198 has a nice feel under 330g lead bullets to me.
34-35 grains or thereabouts should put you around 1600fps

Any experience with any of these? Trying to get the charge weight down to around 30 gr of something low cost per round:

Hi,
I've been loading them with 11 grains of n320 for a "pistol powder" load of about 1000 fps, but it barely fills the case and I always post weigh the rounds to make sure I didn't double charge...
Thanks,
Alan

If you were going to be using lead then I would say use trail boss, but I dont think that there is any data for copper bullets. Reloader 7 works but gonna be hard to find. any of the IMR's or Hogdon powders have worked great for me. I have never tried any of the V stuff

IMR-3031 is not going to measure well in a 550. The straight wall rifle powder I like is AA-2495. It may not meter great either though. For a faster powder Accurate Arms shows AA-5744.
Here is a lot of data from Accurate Arms. AA-2495 is the best I've found in 45-70.

Worst case, you can weigh out the charges as needed. How many 45-70s do you folks load at a time, can't be more than 100 I would guess.

I load 100 at a time. I still use the T mag to load 45/70.

Hi,
I've been lazy about my 45-70 loading lately. I got about 180 of them to load now! I do all the brass prep ahead of time (cleaning, lube, resize, polish) so that when they get on the 550 all they have to do is get a primer, get some powder, seat a bullet, and crimp it. No cleaning any lube off after loading because I polished it off in the tumbler.
Thanks,
Alan

I load 100 at a time on my 550. The locator buttons are teeny, about 1/8th" across the top.
