Just picked up a couple of boresnakes. Do you guys leave them dry and use a wet patch or put solvent and oil on them?

I put some cleaner of the day on the first section. Couple of yanks, clean patch, done.

Usually cleaner on the part before the brush and break free on the long part. they work great

dry once

a little something in front of the brush then a couple pulls.

dry patch, done

I always get a rag and pull the boresnake through it backwards afterwards to get some of the goop off; i've washed them occasionally too

Ballistol on mine, three yanks. Even after using corrosive ammo. I punch the bore but good when I get the time with a rod and brush, but the 'snake will get ya by, 'till ya gots the time. I wash all my 'snakes, especially after using one on corrosive ammo. The rest I wash after three or four times.

Wet patch, then snake. I don't put cleaner on the snake itself.

Another vote for Thorn's method. Thanks to the boresnake the 10/22 no longer gets neglected.

+2 with Thorn... been doing it that way since snakes hit the market. I love my snakes!!! :yesnod:

I've used them dry and with cleaner. They seem to work fine either way. After about a dozen uses I toss them in the wash.

+3 I use my bore snakes the same way as Thorn.
They do make fast work out of cleaning bores, and barrels. No way do they do as good of a job as a bore brush, and patches on a jag though.

does anyone use them between groups when testing ammo or sighting in a rifle? 5 rounds then snake. Been using them for my scatter guns for years, they are the shiznit.

I think Creo uses his between shots on his AR's. You're right about the shotgun cleaning though!!! :yesnod:

I douse it with CLP & cleaner. Then run it through a few times until the bore is clean. When they get real dirty I throw em in the washing machine.

I do use it between firing groups on the range. It's a good tool to for quick cleaning jobs.

Do those things last very long? They seem kind of expensive if they only last as long as a bronze brush. I haven't tried one, yet...

They have about a gazillion times more surface area than a patch, plus two sections of copper brush. I don't know how long it would take to wear one out, but at two passes per cleaning I don't think I will replacing one anytime soon. I got em in 12ga, .30cal rifle, .45 pistol and .22 rifle, and also need to pick up a .38 pistol to round out my collection. Plus, my 5yr old daughter loves pulling the rope while I hold the barrel and that's worth it for me.

Where they really shine is with BP cartridge guns. Just wet the 'snake w/ soap & water & one pass knocks out about 99% of the fouling. Rinse 'snake in soap & water, swing like a bolo (outdoors of course) to shake off most of the water and hang to dry.

I don't use them for smokeless for a couple reasons. You can't get all the petro chem crap out of the 'snake and I don't wish to contaminate my washing machine with lead residue. So, it's like using the same piece of toilet paper every day. :yuk:

Got one in .17 the other day. I only has one row of copper on it and man does that thing pull hard compared to the shotgun snakes.

Boge, one thing you can do is put them in a delicates bag and soak in some dawn dish soap or the go jo without grit. Then take them down to the laundry mat so you don't foul your wife's washing machine.

Also, how do you know what it's like using the same toilet paper every day?:yikes:

I used a .410 as well Cohutt for .45 cal. I use a .50 cal. for a .50 cal rifle and it's like trying to pull a golf ball through a garden hose!!
