Bummer...
When I worked in the inspection department we had Starrett, Brown & Sharpe, and Mitutoyo instruments....when one broke, it was trashed because the cost of repair was usually about the same as a replacement unit...
Just my experience....
BTW, I have an electronic and a dial caliper from Midway and they are both dead on accurate...I use Starrett shim stock to check them from time to time...Actually prefer the dial over the electronic in calipers...no "off and on" or resetting to "zero".

I have taken apart the dial calipers and got them working again.
It is not easy.
Much easier if I have another pair to take apart slowly to see how they are supposed to be assembled.
My cousin got a patent on his coolant proof digital calipers. I bought some.
Those are nice.
I have got quite a few pairs of made in China dial calipers. They vary in accuracy from .0020" to .0002".
And they all cost $20.

Yeah but ive had this one for years and always liked it. It is an older one and they just dont make them like they use to. Hey what do ya think about getting one from ebay? Think it will be as good?

Just remembered...I saw a bunch of dial calipers and micrometer in a pawn shop last week....they looked pretty good and all were upper end....I think the prices were in the $70 -$90 range....
If you want, I will go back tomorrow and get more details...I'll take a piece of shim stock with me to check them with...
Tomorrows a holiday for me so no problem...let me know..

I've got a good pair of SPIs for @$25. Think I got them from MSC, you may want to check'em out to get you by till your's get back.
I have dropped abd broken three Starretts, so I feel your pain. You can put them back together, but they are never the same after that. Just go and get yourself a new one and be more careful next time.
