My wife recently bought me one of those shooting trees made by Do All Targets. So far I've only used cast and plated bullets on it without problems. The directions say not to use FMJ but I'm wondering if any one has without problems. So has anyone tried those with FMJs?

More information is required such as what caliber, what bullet mass, what velocity, the distance from the firing point, etc. Your target's durability a function of it's ability to absorb impacts of a certain mass and energy without damage.

The faster you push a given mass, or the heavier mass you push at a given speed, the higher energy you are imparting on the target. If you use a bullet of sufficient mass traveling at a sufficient velocity, you'll penetrate or at least dent any target.

For example; a 16" main gun on an Iowa class battleship can fire a 1,900 lbs 'bunker buster' type projectile that will penetrate 30 Feet of reinforced concrete!

Cast and plated bullets tend to splatter when they strike hardened steel. FMJ tend to richochet. I learned that the hard way. I shot my 45 ACP at an old fire extinguisher from about 15 yards. The first shot dented the housing. The second dented it deeper. I thought the third would surely make a hole. Wrong! It hit high, traveled down the circumfrence of the dent, came back at me and missed my nards by 2". Yeah, it hurt like a mofo.

I got hit in the jaw from 20+ yards away with a 240g hardcast 44mag off a railroad plate. I hade been dinging it with my own casts from soft 50/50 lead/ww, which flatten out completely (several can be picked up afterwards to go back in the pot). I had a few older hardcast loaded from before i started casting, figured i'd shoot them up since there were only dozen or so.

Ooops. The second shot hit the plate then i saw it out of the corner of my eye (safety glasses ON) almost like slow motion as it was happening. It hit my truck's metal tailgate cage to my right then went hard into my jaw, right on the bone @ my chin.

Left a mark, bled like hell and opened a half inch gash.
