View Full Version : Flat-Rate Box prank?
I took a FRB full of brass to the post office yesterday & the lady behind the counter remarked at how heavy it was. Which got me thinking...
Have any of you ever cast a single, solid block of lead that perfectly fit & completely filled a FRB? I mean, that would be ungodly heavy! I think I'd love to do that once just to see the look of their faces when I wheel that thing in on a hand truck & give it over to them. I should mail one to my father like that unannounced just to get a rouse out of him when he gets a box on his porch that he can't budge!! :animlol:

I believe the maximum weight for an FRB is 70 pounds, so if you walked in with an FRB box 100% filled with a solid block of lead, the postal clerk would likely (and quite properly) refuse it.
Hmm... I wonder what volume of lead 70lbs would be?

Oh, about 170 cubic inches or a cube roughly 5.5 inches on a side.
ETA: Phew, JJB's link shows the same.

Inside dimensions of a FRB be 11.5 x 8.5 x 5.5, scripted right there on da box I a lookin at. Most I ever received in a FRB was 63 lbs. Small package, hard ta handle. :yesnod:

I got another Flat Rate Box (that you would ship books or something in) with inside dimensions of 11.875 x 13.625 x 3.375. So it will hold a 227.53 lb block of lead.
If you could ship that USPS I wonder how much it would cost??

My buddy had a postal lady who faked a signature on a package (which was subsequently stolen, but he could make no claim because it was 'signed for'
I told him to call for pick up with a flat rate box of rocks on one side, and a bubble spacer on the other so that it wouldn't balance. 10 bucks for revenge on a lady who did you for 150$? didn't seem like a bad idea-
It was purely an academic conversation- he never did it- Just venting frustrations.

+1 I got a bunch of bullets coming thanks to that FRB. Also, its a good idea to show love to the people who deliver you stuff (postal worker, UPS guy, FedEx lady, and pizza delivery).

Oreo, that would be a GREAT prank! Ship me a FRB full of lead. I'll really be surprized and not know what to say when I can't pick it up....
JOKES ON ME! Ship me lead and we'll all laugh together.

The new boxes are larger, but I don't believe the USPS has lifted the 70 pound maximum. The messages they send, though, are a bit conflicting. This page at the Postal Store, http://tinyurl.com/35eshk, describes the new boxes and says that the price is fixed "regardless of weight (domestically) or destination, similar to our other Flat Rate products." This wording makes it sound like the weight is unlimited. However, we know that the older-style FRB boxes have a 70 pound limit, and their page on the Postal Store has the same "regardless of weight" wording which we know to be misleading. http://tinyurl.com/okwmp. The main Priority Mail page, http://tinyurl.com/y67vk3, clarifies this by still showing a 70 pound maximum.

If you really wanted to piss off your postman, ship yourself a FRB full of lead to your next door neighbors house with your name on the SHIP TO line and your address as the return address.
