I don't see the PT1911s on the web site. :( How can I find out about them?

I've never shot one, but my local 'smith who has worked on many said that Taurus 1911's are turds. I read that a lot as well on other 1911 forums. Just sayin'. :frown5:

Does the Taurus 1911 have that stupid lock on it like the revolvers?

creophus

The Taurus does have the stupid lock. It's on the hammer of the PT1911. It's less obvious than it is on the Smiths.

I have a PT1911 and absolutely love it. I find the 1911 community to be the biggest group of gun snobs. When I spend a bunch of money on a gun, I expect it to work. If it needs to be broken in, they should have done that at the factory, IMO.

With all that being said, some PT1911s aren't good. My first one was "DOA". The grip safety didn't work on mine. Didn't matter if you pressed it or not the hammer would still drop. Thankfully the dealer exchanged it and I didn't even have to bother with sending it to Taurus.

My second PT1911 has been a dream. Only complaint is that the finish is THIN. Mine is super accurate and runs everything I feed it.

I don't own stock in the company so if no one else likes them, that's fine with me. I'll buy another one if the price is right.

Does the Taurus 1911 use interchangable parts? MIM?

Does the Taurus 1911 use interchangable parts? MIM?
Yes to both.

It's a low cost gun. I can see why other 1911s might cost more for certain things, like a nicer finish and nice wood grips.

Some folks don't like MIM, so they add that to the list of criticisms.

...I find the 1911 community to be the biggest group of gun snobs...

I'll second that. The only thing that rivals them are Harley owners as both are usually tinkering and adding stuff constantly. I think the 1911 was a wonderful design for its time and I love to shoot them. You cannot beat a great 1911 trigger. However, when I CCW it's usually a Glock or SIG 228.

1911 triggers are sweet.

The Taurus 1911 seems to me a pretty fair gun for the price, but...

It has a couple of things than tend to turn me off. First and foremost, it (for some ungodly reason) has a proprietary sight cut so, you're either stuck with the OEM's that come on it or, the (fixed) ones just released for it by Dawson Precision. Inconceivable to me that there's no quality adjustable sights for it and that alone is enough to make me pass. I'll save my bucks for a Les Baer. A shooting friend just got one and my initial "fondling session" was all it took to appreciate the fit and quality. He wanted something done to it, picked up the phone to call and guess who answered the phone...?

It was a newspaper ad in yesterdays paper. They still do actually use telephone technology at Larry's. ;)

I know that the PT1911 is not a Les Baer or Wilson, but they include some features that you normally pay extra for, sometimes a lot for. There are models that come with Heinie sights. The barrels, frames and slides are forged.

Not being a snob, I just wanted to mention it. Seems like a great price for somebody who might want to try out a 1911 with a few tweaks.

To put a PT1911 and a Les Baer in the same.....

Oh, Good God...... F'in never mind.

Wonder if that's a local only price or if they'll ship. I need another firearm like a need a hole in the head.

I think they will sell at that price to anyone with a valid credit card, Dan.

The boys are really looking forward to those 20-ga hulls and that other stuff. It ought to keep them busy for days or weeks!

Not to be knocking Taurus, but their Cust. Serv. history is ripe with nightmarish tales of countless to & fro shippings and repair "gestation" periods bordering on the ludicrous. In essence, the concensus seems to be that their Cust. Serv. is the worst in the industry.

I have some good friends in South America (where Taurus is made) and there are some bright people there, but I always remember that it is the Third World and their work ethic, as well as approach to life in general, is totally different than ours. The only thing you can get quickly there is liquor & a sexually transmitted disease.

Just my two cents, but if I were going to buy a "low ball" 1911 I'd at least get one from a company that had great cust. serv., like S.A. Just sayin'.

Dave, I just shipped the loaded stuff today FedEx. I have to run to USPS tomorrow and ship the emptys. BTW, there were only 9 boxes in the flat, one was missing for whatever reason.

It's been hard, but I've only bought two guns this year, and those were both trades. I'm going to stay strong and not buy one of these. Mills and lathes aren't cheap.

Creo's Taurus rocks... I have no basis of comparison 'cept for articles and ads talkin' 'bout 1911's. I picked up his, aimed it downrange real nice like, pulled the trigger and nailed the bull. That is all. Never done one before that moment. That said enough for me, short of the several bazillion dollars I could save buyin' it instead of some pretentious gun my daddy never said nothin' good about.

I don't need anohter gun either, but the Taurus 1911 is a real temptation for price, my experience with Creo's and the ability for me to say I have a .45 of some sort.

Man at less than $400, I'm tempted to buy another one. I'm just like Dan on the whole...don't need another gun thing.

I may just jump on this. I'll decide as soon as the wife gets home from the doctor. I was at the range yesterday evening with my super beater Ithaca 1911 and I think I need an upgrade.

I wouldn't compare it to a $2100 gun, but it's certainly worth the money. Mine shoots better than a Kimber that I shot.

Maybe I'm just use to it though.

My only question is can you upgrade the internals if'n you ever wanted to with standard 1911 parts? They seem nice, and are a cheap way to get a forged frame for doing a .460 Rowland conversion on (the main reason I want one) and make some big booms.

creophus
03-31-2009, 11:38 AM
I don't know much about the internals. I'm not a gunsmith and only tinker with ARs.

I paid $600 for mine with night sites NIB before the price jump. I'd consider another for $339! I'm love my taurus, like said above, the finish is THIN and is already starting to show some holster wear (should have got the stainless one). I don't really care that much as it's more of a woods gun than anything. i've never had a FTF or FTL with mine, goes bang every time I pull the trigger. Found the sight screws worked their way loose and had to loctite and tighten, but nothing major. I've got 1000 rounds thru mine so far.

Sounds like your experience is the same as mine. I'd certainly get another one for $339. Mine is super accurate and has a great trigger.

My Taurus just broke the 10,000 round mark yesterday during a USPSA practice session. After reading so much pro/con on the gun last year I decided to run mine until something broke or loosened up. So far, so good. Standard load is 5.0grns. WST w/200grn. LSWC which shoots to POA and into 2" @ 25 yards from a Ransom Rest. Recoil spring is still strong but I have gone through three shock buffs changed out at 3000 round intervals.

I own a Les Baer and Wilson and can verify the Taurus isn't in the same category fit, finish, or accuracy-wise. Of course I've got around $3300 into both, used. But for the average working stiff who has to save up over time for a $500-600 1911 the Taurus will give him his money's worth.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I don't have nearly that many rounds through mine. Maybe 2500 or so.

FWIW, not bashing, I have owned 6 Taurus handguns. My PT1911 was my 1st 1911, shot great out of the box. Shortly after the damn lock started malfunctioning, it would lock, I'd have to clear the gun, unlock the lock and cycle the safety to make ti work.

I returned it.

I just called and was told the $339 price was a apparently misprint in their sales ad. The actual price is $488 plus shipping... Not exactly a screaming deal. Too bad, I was gonna order one

I'll pass at that price. Makes me feel a little better though since I ought not spend the money any way.

Never had a problem with mine. But when I decided to shoot the piece a lot I added a drop of blue locktite to the lock just to ensure it wouldn't move at the wrong time.

I'm thinking about picking one of these up. Last year i would have never considered anything other than a revolver from Taurus, but I keep hearing that their semi-auto side has improved significantly. Anyone know what happened internally at Taurus? Things usually don't improve over time without help, minus the exception of good scotch :).
