Looking to get some lead and am wondering if fishing weights are good for casting bullets.

What do you think?

Fishing weights are probably closer to pure lead. I would get all I can. You can mix them with WW's or Lino to harden it up if you need to.

Try to pick up a few of those downrigger trolling weights. They are lead. I've been wondering what the bottom of Lake Michigan may look like. I don't know how often they get lost. but a couple of them would cast more than a few bullets.

Once we're done inventing the brass magnet we've got to start working on the underwater lead magnet.

Maaaaaaaan, no way I'd disgrace my fishin' weights by turnin'em into bullets!!! :yuk:

What'cha gonna do when you need to go fishin'? :dunno: There is plenty of lead from other sources (besides sinkers aint as cheap as they used to be). Unless you plan to give up one of God's gifts to mankind's sanity (fishing), then find your lead elsewhere... you dude's are goin' off the deep end 'round here!!! :boom:

I prefer shooting to fishing. I had a line on some lead what was in the form of fishing weights.

I've heard that the price wasn't all that good so I'll pass.

Perhaps next time.

Consider the number of options you have for fishing weights: Steel (old washers or nuts would make good weights), lead, copper jackets from bermine, rocks that you drilled holes through, etc., pretty much anything that is both handy and heavy. Now, the options for casting boolits: Lead. It isn't a matter of giving up one hobby for the other, but rather is just a matter of prioritizing the use of raw materials.

Fishing weights are also good for slugging barrels.

Craig, I'll grant you that premise, especially since all the tree-huggers are trying to ban our use of lead sinkers - just like the insane anti-duck-and-bird-hunting-crowd did with shooting lead... nothing like adding a naturally occurring substance back to earth again and calling it poisonous when you do... GRRRRRRRRRR... don't get me started!

I just don't see the sense of turning sinkers that are perfectly good and already made for fishing into something you'll shot downrange with nothing more than a hole in the paper to show for it. I can fill a cooler full of filets with one sinker! :yesnod:

You go right ahead and do that.

I'll be trying to find lead to make bullets out of whatever I can.

So to get back on topic a bit...sinkers are closer to pure lead and I should mix it with something to harden it up right?

You're a better fisherman than I am, then. When I fished, I probably averaged losing a dozen lures and sinkers for every little fish I caught. :( I'm probably going to be getting back into fishing while in Pittsburgh, though, as it has been a loooooooonnnnnnnggggggg time since my dad has gone fishing and I'm looking forward to getting him back out.

BTW, the "naturally occurring substance" line of thought does have one problem: Concentration. Carbon monoxide is a naturally occurring compound that is in every breath you take, but I doubt you'd want to breathe it in large concentrations.

Fishing sinkers ya get commercially are now being made from zinc and concrete. Go ta wally world, you a see, not all of em are soft lead anymore.

For real.

As far as fishing vs shooting where lead useage is concerned, just make a nice 8ft cast net, you a eat forever with dat. Score ya some minnows or shrimps bait ya hook, reel em in.

Melt da weights off da cast net if ya need bullets. Use some rocks, heavy nuts/bolts etc for ya cast net if ya get in a pinch.

Buy ya a bobber if ya losin fishin weights all da time or switch ta a 3/4" threaded nut for a weight.

Craig, I'm not sure I want to go fishing with you. Then again, maybe I do... :animlol:

Just go to Canada. Went there when I was 12 with 51 other relatives and we caught several hundred pounds a day and fried it all up at fish camp that night. After day one none of us even used bait, just a gold Eagle Claw hook and cane poled em outta the water 'til we couldn't lift our arms up anymore. That trip ruined me on fishing forever and if I don't catch something within about 30sec then it becomes Beerthirty.

Hey, you have to do something while waiting for the fish to nibble on the bait, right? Little hand drill, carbide bit: Endless supply of weights.

(And no, I'm just kidding. I've never used rock weights -- yet.)

The kind of fishing I do doesn't require a sinker.

I'm a better fisherman than hunter any old day, but I know I'm a freak of nature around here NOT wanting to melt everything in sight into a bullet. :)

I don't anticipate they will ban fishing. If they do require some other material to be used instead of lead while fishing it won't be as big a deal. Craig has a good point.

Not being able to use lead in shotgun loads is the worst.
