Everyone I have seen recommend or review this powder talks about how clean it burns, unfortunately right now I'm not experiencing that. I loaded up some 9mm 125gr LRN today with the listed maximum of 3.6 grains and it was still burning dirty. Many on another forum are loading 9mm over 4.0 grains and say it burns clean and is a nice shooter. There's a lot of controversy on the low numbers provided by AA in their most recent load data. I don't want to do anything unsafe and harm my pistol or more importantly myself, but what gives? I don't want to be breathing in all this damn powder and blowing black out of my nose every time I come back from the range.

Am I missing something here?

Load info:

Missouri Bullet Company 125gr LRN
Winchester Small Pistol Primer
3.6 grains of Solo 1,000
Mixed brass (once fired)

Thanks

I have a feeling most of what you're experiencing is from the cast bullet lube. No powder is going to be "clean" with cast like jacketed, there is debris and smoke from the lube.

Solo 1000 is a very clean powder, as is Clays, however, with cast, there are certain trade offs.

I MIGHT be inclined to work up high absent of pressure signs, in an effort to see if thing clean up; however becareful with some powders like Clays, as they'll spike on you in .1-.2 of a grain. I have NOT notice Solo spiking Clays style though.

The loads today were at the listed maximum, but there is no signs of excess pressure or anything unusual at all on the brass. How much higher would you go in this case to see if it cleans up a bit? There's guys over on BE running 4.0-4.5grs of this stuff shooting 9mm, granted they're loading longer but still. The longest I can load these rounds for my Glock is 1.15, any longer and the bullet hits the rifling of the KKM barrel and the round won't seat deep enough and it won't cycle through the gun.

I'd work up in .2 gr steps until I got to a level I was happy with or pressure signs appeared.

Ok thanks for the advice.

Also just for comparison, I shot a mag of WWB 9mm side by side with my reloads today, and my loads with the Solo 1,000 felt like mouse farts compared to the Winchester ammo.

WWB is not soft shooting for what it is, especially since it chronos around anemic specs (1180 FPS).

I don't currently have a chrono so I have no clue what my rounds are coming out of the barrel at. A chrono will be a future purchase but first I need to stock up on primers, brass, and powder.

I load 4.2-4.3 grs to reach PF with my Jacketed. I don't get lead load data vs Jacketed. I always want to load them the same. I did with my Precision Delta 147gr because they produced the same chrono results like that.

How clean burning was it at that charge weight? When I shot my loads today, just like the 3.2 and 3.4 before there was a huge puff of black powder that shot out of the gun with each shot. Some powder even ended up on my arm. The range today did not have as good ventilation as the one last time and today I was blowing all kinds of sut out of my nose, and my throat hurts. Didn't happen last time, and I would like to be able to shoot indoors as my local outdoor range has unreasonable hours and way too many rules to shoot there.

4.2 grs is clean burning. No different the most other powders. They all have their unique dirt/sott (sp?) siginiture but its not bad at all.

Have you weighted the bullets?

The bullets themselves alone?

Most are 125 gr some up to 1/2 grain less.
