So I am getting sick of looking at all this casting stuff sitting in my garage collecting dust and reading about people casting. I have some clean pure lead...could I melt that in my bottom pour Lee to try my hand at casting a few 9mm. I wouldn't shoot em, scouts honor, I just want to "play". With the move coming up I probably won't get the chance for a while otherwise. What do you guys think? I can just re-melt the lead later...I just REALLY want to play.

Sure go for it.

Could even load and shoot some soft loads.

Worst that will happen, you will have to clean lead from the barrel.

Think of all the fun you will have, and it allows time to think/re-engineer your casting method while moving and setting back up.

Cast some out of pure lead, make sure you run them hot, pure lead has a higher melting temp. You will learn a couple things. One is how heavy a bullet your mold will throw. Another is how "small" a bullet it will throw. Pure lead shrinks more than an alloy.

So when is the "move" ?? Do you need a little harder alloy to play with??

Pure lead does not cast very well. Add some tin.

Pure lead and soft lube is only good for 1700fps (or so), works great in revolvers and charcoal burners

I am leaving on the 4th of April. I don't have anything harder to play with nor do I have any tin on linotype whatsoever. I want to practice and learn the process. The Lee 20lb pot I got is used, didn't come with instructions so I'm not sure what number to set the dial to, probably find that on Google.

You wanna buy some Lino?? If you want just a few pounds to play with Ill send ya some for free. If you want need a larger quanity Id have to sell ya some.

75% pure lead and 25% lino is a pretty good mix. PM me an address and Ill send you a few pounds. Remember the Lee only holds 17 pounds so calculate for about 15 pounds. 180oz of pure lead and 60oz of lino would be a good place to start.
