I hadn't either until this morning on the radio Jayhawk. A feller that has pursued apples used in cooking was being interviewed. Right interesting program.
At one point he was asked what his favorite apple dish was and he replied that it was the Marlborough Pie, and described it. He claimed to be from the deep south, but that this Olde New England pie had won his heart in the apple pie arena. He says that this is the original American apple pie.
I got ta try it. Apples? Custard? :treerat:

Sounds good. I doubt Apple Pie is a southern thing anyway. How many apple trees you see down here?
Pecan pie and Peach cobbler are more southern me thinks.
JJB, when you gonna make this? Gotta know what time to come over.

MP is delishush, fantastic. Lil woman done real good. First slice was at room temp, a tad loose IMO. It needs one more egg, a tad more nutmeg, and one less apple. YMMV.

Prior to sporterization, da original recipe.
FOR THE FILLING
4 apples (Cortland, McIntosh, or Granny Smith), peeled
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2/3 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 cup heavy cream
Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
Pinch of ground cinnamon
1. Using a box grater or other hand-held grater set in a bowl, grate the apples down to the core. Sprinkle the grated mixture with lemon juice.
2. In a large nonstick skillet, melt the butter. Add the apples and sugar and cook, stirring often, until the sugar melts and boils. Reduce the heat slightly and let the mixture bubble steadily for 8 to 10 minutes or until the apples are soft and most of the liquid has evaporated. Remove from the heat and let cool for at least 10 minutes.
3. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs. Whisk in the cream, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Stir in the apples until well mixed. Pour the custard into the pie shell.
4. Transfer to the oven and bake the pie for 35 minutes or until the custard is set and a little puffy but not browned. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

Update:
I've been eating some of this pie. After 24 hrs, I think this pie is better than the day you make it. Going to have to make another to confirm this before long, as the current one is almost gone.
I also concur with the esteemed JJB's recommendations for changes to the recipe.

I work with a fella' that was raised in Eastern Montana and South Dakota. He is, I believe, the only other person I've EVER heard say "gooder'n snoose" but I knew by how he said it that it was WAY purdy good.
I've never had rhubarb pie like zdog showed there (looks mighty good, zdog), but I HAVE had a concoction called "Strawberry-Rhubarb" which ain't the same a'tall, but not bad. Gives those strawberries a little "zing". My wife makes a rhubarb cake which is one of my favorites. It has kind of a crusty cinnamon-suger top on it, moist cake, and tangy rhubarb. Mmmmmmmm................... :yesnod:

Snoose; Copenhagen, Loggin show couldn't run without snoose
Pie Plant; Rhubarb first plant of the season suitable for making pie.
Strawberry Rhubarb Pie:treerat: We should have some local berries in the next couple of weeks, SRP is at the very top of the list!!!!!

As an aside, I was offered snoose once in my youth. Not only would my mother have skinned me alive slowly had I tried it, but the smell nauseated me immediately and severely. That there is something I wouldn't wish on anyone. So I'm guessin' "gooder 'n snoose" is something of a left-handed compliment when used by some people. :D
