Hey guys....after a short (25 yr) hiatus I am going to be loading some .357 again. I found 1000 older CCI 200 primers hiding behind some powder and was wondering how long these things keep. I will be loading 7.0 gr of Herco under a 158gr Ranier plated RN. Just how important is it to use magnum primers or could I use regular small pistol in a load like this. Is there a way to tell if a primer has gone bad?

The primers are still good if they have been stored where they aren't exposed to adverse conditions for a long period. Herco in .357 runs fine with a standard primer. It's Herco, so, it's going to be a little dirty compared to some powders, but it will deliver accuracy if you work up your load to find the right combination for your gun. I like Herco.

I have primers from the early 70's that a friend gave me,and they are still good. The main reason for using a magnum primer in the .357 is if you are trying to light up a large colume of 2400.

I figure these to be ~70 years old. I found them 24 years ago in an old trunk stored outside under an open pole barn.
They still work.

Some of the primers I was given are in the cardboard, and wood boxes.
