I have a chance to get one of these....but I ain't going to the range and shoot boxes of .44 Magnum....I have shot the cartridge and its no fun to shoot as many as I like to at one range visit.

But, I have never shot a .44 Special....the question is: how much less is the recoil from the .44 Special than the .44 Magnum....

Just give me a ballpark figure: 80%, 75%, 70% less or what...

If it wasn't such a good deal, I wouldn't consider anything this powerful but if I can trade a Kel-Tek PT3AT and a C note for the Ruger, I've got to consider it...

It is a revolver so you can load it as light as you light, you do not have to worry about cycling the action, just make sure the bullet gets out the end of the barrel.

If you are talking full up .44 mag I would say that .44 special is less than half. I have some .44 mag reloads I got from Miwall and they are half of the recoil of nasty .44s.

.44s are fun to shoot but if you want to plink there are cheaper rounds. I blink iwth the .38s and knock the crap out of stuff with the .44.

.44 mag is verry versital, you can make them hot as hell or as weak as bunny farts.

I have a super blackhawk and can load them so hot thay you practically have to wear a helmet to protect your head from getting hit with the gun when it recoils, to so weak that my 72 year old dad can shoot it with one hand. If the price is right get it. Make loads that are fun for you to shoot, with the occational hand cannon load just for fun.

Do you use .44 Special brass for the reduced loads or .44 Magnum for them....I remember hearing about too little powder in a pistol case causing some problems..

But a 60% reduction in recoil should be close to .45 ACP which is fine for lots of shooting...

I only use mag brass but I have not loaded any extra weak rounds. I suppose you could have accuracy issues from inconsistent ignition but nothing dangerous.

Personally i have found that if you load to the min on AA#7 and or Bluedot; that the 44 mag dosent recoil much. personnally if your going to buy a 44 mag and load them weak then it isnt worth buying. at least load them med. i do how ever have some 44 spcl brass that i might give up if you decided to get it. you can load those med and they will be like shooting a med 45acp round

reduced loads with cast bullets make my 2 big heavy 44s the favorite handgun to shoot for womens and chilrens.

in fact, friday i took three women from my office to the range, 2 never had shot before, 1 had. they shot about everything i owned including a sbh and a p4at. none wanted to shoot the p3at more than a couple shots, the ruger and sw629 each had several cylinders through them, 80 rounds or so total. (All rounds were loaded to about 800fps)

Load the lighter loads in the mag cases no biggie. I have used titegroup, unique and trail boss for these.

personnally if your going to buy a 44 mag and load them weak then it isnt worth buying. I had to come to this conclusion myself. I was thinking of getting a RedHawk, but thought about it more and decided that I should pass. I don't really enjoy 357 magnum, so why bother with the 44 magnum? I decided to get a 1911 instead. Glad I did!

Unless you're getting a great deal on the gun, I'd pass.

If, however, you're getting the gun for a steal, then by all means buy it!!

.44Mag with a 240 grain Keith at about 850-900 fps is a pleasure to shoot. Push it at say 1450 fps and its a handful in my SBH with the 10" barrel and just downright unpleasant in my 629 with the 3" barrel. Use .44mag brass rather than .44 special brass and your chambers wont get carboned up. Either loading is more than adequate for deer, the hotter one gets the job done and done well on elk.

My stepdad gave me a 7.5" Interarms Virginian Dragoon in .44Mag a while back. Thing's built like a Ruger Super Blackhawk but with a C-O-L-T action. I'm pretty sure you could fill a case to the brim with Clays and compress a 300gr bullet in it and that thing could digest it without a burp. It massive.

It handles heavy loads OK, but it also loves a 240gr SWC over 7gr of Titegroup. I also have a 629MG that I shoot medium loads in and it shoots great. So yeah, you can load a .44MAG down and it shoot OK. IIRC, St. Elmer recommended medium loads for social work (16gr of 2400 comes to mind).

Ruger's SBH is one of the best deals in revolvers. Tough as nails and also absorbs recoil well. The Bisley grip frame is the one that seems to be recommended the most for heavy loads, however.

I have the the 7.5" Super Redhawk in 44mag. Love it. I put together some cat fart loads of 6.5 gr Titegroup under a 240 gr SWC, using 44mag cases. Accurate at reasonable distances and very pleasant to shoot.

Social work, i like that.

240g is a lot of lead and @ 900 fps will definitely leave a mark, more than most 45 acp loads would deliver.

Interesting observation. OTOH, my G21 load is a MG 230 gr. HP going 930 fps.

I feel adequately represented. :animlol:

The More you shoot it the easier it is , in the 80's I would shoot a 100 rds of 44 mag a day when I shot IHMSA pistol
