Well, the whole thing about me not being an LEO may be changing soon (I hope).........

I applied back a week and a half ago or so to be a Court Process Officer with local Youth Detention. I got a call Friday; I have a meeting Thursday night with the supervisor and the other applicants to go over the job itself, the hiring process, and the training. This is a sworn LEO position; mostly serving papers from Juvenile and Family Courts, but warrant service as well (though mostly juveniles). Sounds like a lot of fun to me, and I just thought I'd share! :)

Good luck to you in the process. If you get the job, I hope it's all you want it to be.

Sounds like a good start. It is a good way to break into the field. That's how I started, with the yoots. I suggest you read-up on all the juvenile justice stuff going on in your area. You'll impress your interviewers.

Best of luck to you. The LE job market in my area is tighter than a frog's butthole.

Best of luck, CJ. Lots easier to find new jobs in the criminal justice system from within than it is from outside the field.

918v can likely speak with a LOT more detail than I can about CA law involving juvenile courts and procedures, suffice it to say that juvenile law seeks to rehabilitate via early intervention more stridently than does adult court, and tends at the early stages of a baby crook's development to be a bit more indulgent with sanctions. Sometimes, it even works.

KY has a DJJ

It looks like they combined probation and parole to save money, as did other states.

Good luck.

I provide family services in for a juvenile court via some cutting edge evidenced based family therapy called Multisystemic Therapy (http://www.mstservices.com)
The research shows we have about an 80-85% success rate of helping parents keep their little thuglets from re-offending. Locally our 4 person team has helped reduce the county's residential treatment costs by $5,000,000 over the past 5 years. Which isn't chicken feed.

Good luck! I'll be lookin' for a job myself here pretty soon! I'm thinking about relocating to North Carolina or Florida. Tons of jobs down south.

Yeah, this is a local agency, not the state (though a few guys in my Guard unit work for state DJJ).

You should hook-up with a cop from the local gang unit. They deal with alot of juvenile bangers and their probation officers. They will give you the uncensored story. Make an appointment with their sergeant. They are usually pretty friendly to that sort of thing.

Well, I had the meeting with the Youth Detention people. If I can get this job, it sounds like it's going to be cake (Court Process Officer). Fully sworn, armed LE; with a take home car (though only to be used to go to work and back, and without lights/siren), good benefits, and banker's hours . Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:30pm, with weekends and holidays off; though I would be on 24-hour call for extradition transports. Mostly just serving papers for Family Court and Juvenile Court (summonses and subpeonas), though with an occasional bench warrant or emergency custody order (saying that Child Protective Services is about to come take their child out of the home for the child's safety). Luckily, I won't have to participate in the removal itself.
I go April 8th (tentatively) for the physical agility test, and then shortly thereafter for the psychological suitability screening. If I get past that, then I have an interview, and they pick 2 people to go on in the process. If I'm one of those two, I'll have a polygraph and a medical exam. If I get through both of those, they'll do a background check and pick one person to offer the job to.
If I get the job, I'll have to do an initial 40-hour firearms certification course, then get to start work. Sometime in the first year, they'll send me to the state-run police academy in Richmond at EKU for 18 weeks. After that, I just do 40 hours of inservice training a year, and can work off-duty jobs if I want to (security for various places, mostly).

I do believe I'm just a wee bit excited, even if I am fighting the tail end of a migraine. Luckily, the sudafed and excedrine have kicked in and settled a lot of it.

Sounds like a nice job, although I don't understand why they would make the psych/ background a competitive process. That is usually a pass/fail kind of thing.

It is a pass/fail, but that's how the state has the process set up (they set the standards).

Well, I went Tuesday for the Physical Agility Test. Got there, and was told I cannot test because I needed a doctor's release, because I checked "yes" to one of the questions on the medical questionnaire. This was run by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council. They told me to contact the agency I was applying for and see if they'd let me retest. I called them later that morning (around 0930 or so), and left a voice mail. Still no word back, and at this point I'm not very hopeful at all........

Typical bureaucrat crap. They'll reschedule you.

Honestly, I'm not that convinced on that one. They're trying to eliminate 29 of 30 people for this. After the PAT, psych profile, and interviews, they're cutting it down to 2 people, so in their eyes, it makes it easier on them to choose.

918v

But you haven't taken the PAT, so they can't eliminate you using the PAT as a reason. You have a right to attempt the PAT at this point.

Thanks guys.

918V, as far as suing them, the requirement for a doctor's release WAS on the form, it turns out, just in teensy tiny little letters, so that angle's out. I do have a few other options I'm thinking about right now, though. I'll update when I know more.
