Yo 'Slick: Casting 500s

Slick,

Local shooter says he's tired of paying $4/round for his 500 & is about to start casting. He's off to a good start with lead-whoring and has a conveyor belt of Bus WW dumping lead into his lap (for now anyway).

He wants to cast some thumpers but is worried about getting the formula right. I have sent him to lasc ref page and cast boolits, told him i thought the WW alloy would work fine.

I remember some posts of yours on some other site:ack2: a while back Can you post some info on your 500 casting work w/pics to motivate and inspire him? If you do I'll be sure he finds his way to this thread.

Yeah, I can, gimme a day or two. I gotta dig em out if I can. I'm not sure if I have em on my laptop. If not, I'll post em when I get home.

But, for a mix, I've used everything from 10-11 BHN at 1100 fps or so up to 17 BHN at just over 1800. 10-11 BHN leaded up like a mofo wit LBT blue and Magma blue, less so with Blue Angel, not at all wit Lar's Red.

I haven't run the 17 BHN wit anythang except Lar's an it does fine. I got a couple hundred lubed up wit Blue Angel an a few with Jake's Purple (cause I like dat color) but haven't had a chance to run em yet.

I was outta Lar's Red for too damned long then I got a backorder in an Freak was a lifesaver an sent me enough to get me by for a while in the interim.

If the Jake's shoots, I'm gonna start usin it. No mess to deal with.

As far as moulds, I've been using a RCBS 2 banger in 380gr and Leecision 440gr that with a gas check an lube go about 460gr. The 460gr with 33.6 H4227 is all dat an a bag a chips. I also got a 400gr from a GB over at CB dat I ain't tried yet, but will soon.

I'm beginnin to believe my gun shoots better wit bullets sized to .500 instead a .501. Not 100% sure yet, but I sized some to .500 wit a size die I got in a trade just to see an it worked real good. No leadin either.

Tell your bud to pony up for a couple a Lee 2 bangers an get wit it. They shoot great, da moulds is cheap an you a prolly end up wit a 500 since you a like it so much.
