I got one of these things installed in my gun cabinet but never used it. It's pose to keep the air dry, thus prevent rusting. Has anyone here used one or using one? I don't have a prollem with rust as we speak and I ain't really fond of leavin a heatin element plugged in all the time. Gimmee some pointers if yall got any.

Thanks.. Eazy

I use one in my safe and it works fine. I have never had issues with it. The only thing you need to do is make sure nothing else in the safe is leaning on it.

There isn't much to them. The fact that the company has made them for a while and they haven't been sued out of business for liability issues should reinforce that using one is safe practice.

It's on the mounts that came with it. Nothing is touching it. How warm does it get?

Their website says it gets to 150 degrees.

However, I just went and touched mine. It was warm to the touch, my guess is maybe 100 degrees. Now I am not a walking thermometer, but there is no way that it was close to "almost too warm to hold."

Is yours set up horizontally at the bottom of your cabinet, as described in the above link?

Mine is horizontal near the base of my safe. It's been in there for 6? years now. Heats the air in the safe up a bit to push it away from the dewpoint temperature and reduce the RH. Of course I probably don't need one it UT.

Yep, lays in jes like that. So if I have no prollems with rust do I still need it hooked up?

I didn't have rust problems beforehand, but leave it hooked up as an additional way to ensure against rust.

You can also get that white silica cat litter at a pet store to use as a dessicant if you are paranoid about the goldenrod. Put the cat litter in your oven at @165-175 for several hours to make sure it is dried out. Store in a paper bag in your safe. Every three or four months re-dry the dessicant.

In GA? I'd leave it plugged in, but maybe it's not so necessary in an air conditioned house.

Eazy when I bought my safe I bought the golden rod also and have been using it ever since for 7 years now. I have never had a problem with rust and if I touch the golden rod I can hold my finger there forever so I dont think it is much of a fire hazard. I usually leave my AC off for at least 4 months out of the year in the winter time. Mine works great.

Yall keep talkin of gun safes, mine is not a safe. It's a 12 gun wooden cabinet. I was concerned cause of the wood. The rod is attatched to the mounts that came with it and don't touch any other part of the cabinet. Still think it's safe in a wood box????
