The cutter starts in, but doesn't go all the way.

It's a 45 acp on a 45 acp guide.

Is the case hitting on the bulge of the guide or is the pin hitting the bottom of the case?
If its hitting the bulge, sometimes you just have to shove it in there.
If its hitting the bottom, make sure the primer is removed and the flashhole is centered.

Alright, I just didn't know how hard to push it on, because it is hitting on the bulge.
The pilot has a stop pin that must go through the flash-hole . I think you may have an off-center flash hole that does not permit this. You have a bad case.
In the alternative, the pilot may be too large in diameter, and/or your sizer die is sizing the case too much. See if you can force it. I highly recommend you polish the pilot otherwise it will scratch the hell out of the case's innards.

It should a little tight. It keeps the cut concentric.

Why are you trimming .45 ACP?
Maybe to make his taper crimp perfectly consistent?

Only people with SIG 210s do that.

Cause I thought I was supposed to?
Nah ugh!
Trimming revolver brass is commonplace. It really helps with crimping.
Also, when using a real heavy slug, like a 360gr. in a FA 454 Casull, you have to trim the brass, else the bullet will stick out the cylinder and tie up the gun.
Cause I thought I was supposed to?
That's right! :iagree:

With few exceptions, pistol brass does not get trimmed unless you have a SIG 210.

.45ACP brass shrinks. You'll NEVER need to trim .45ACP brass that's been fired through a pistol.

I once left 45 ACP brass in the tumbler overnight and it shrunk all the way down to 40 S&W.
Really? I'll have to try that!!:p

That's no 45 ACP. It's about 2x too long.
Looks like a bad case. Try some others, that you found on the ground at the range.

Nope. The case thing says 45 acp on it. The case may not be great, but it didn't work with the other 149 i had. And I feel special, this is my first thread Koski has posted on!

All right, slap a tape measure against that 45 ACP case and tell us how tall it is.

Ooh, and if you have a loaded round of factory ammo, measure that case (case only) too.

I think the only reason I bothered with it was because it was .899. I believe it was a CCI case. But the case gauge says 45 ACP on it. But I don't need to worry bout trimming them, then screw it.
You should trim them if you want a nice crimp. If you are content with an ugly uneven crimp, then don't bother.

No it does not.
It shortens due to expansion in the chamber, and some 45 ACP sizer dies do not restore the case to its original size. Redding dies do, however.

Trim length on straightwall handgun ammo is largely irrelevant to the imparting of a taper crimp. The ONLY purpose of the taper crimp is to remove the bell. If you were trying to accurately roll-crimp into a cannelure, then, of course, trim length might be critical.
The ONLY purpose of taking reloading advice from a novice is to assure that one's screwing up. :biggrinjester:
Run that picture in paint and shrink the horizontal by 30%
Trim length on straightwall handgun ammo is largely irrelevant to the imparting of a taper crimp.
If you have a batch of cases where the longest case is separated from the shortest by .010", then some of the resulting rounds will be undercrimped (bell not completely removed) and some overcrimped (case mouth forced into the bullet shank resulting in decreased case tension). The reason for this is the crimp die is fixed and the crimp is a function of case length.

So you're saying the evidence was tampered with?
If the trimmer does not fit, you must acquit.

Choices:
1) Send a case or two with the trimmer back to Lee and they will make it fit. They will also charge you for it.
2) Don't bother trimming pistol cases. Richard Lee states in his book that the only reason he sells pistol trimmers is because people wanted them. He said if people want to waste their money, he'd gladly make money off them.
