Freedom Arms... might as well get the best.

If you've got the cheese, there is nothing better than a Freedom Arms. Built like a Swiss watch married to an Abrams tank. Loads that will smoke a Ruger will run just fine in a FA (not that its advocated, but the strength diference is real). They're accurate at several hundred yards, basically the standard by which other revolvers are judged.

If you're not going there, my next choice would probably be a T/C. You don't buy a .454 for rate of fire, so get a handgun that can leverage the capabilities of the cartridge.

Following those two, you can buy a .460 Smith and it will shoot .454 for reduced recoil practice. After that there's the Ruger and the Taurus, both substantially more affordable than those at the top of the list, and both perfectly servicable arms, but they're behind in fit and finish and accuracy by a decided margin. Will you notice in the field, probably not, but its there.

Im not sure I agree, although I have shot a Freedom arms, I think that my Taurus is just as accurate. Honestly very few people will take a 100 + yard shot with a handgun unless scoped. My dad has a Freedom arms and a Taurus 454 casull and I also have a Taurus 454 casull. which I have loaded to Freedom arms specs and have had NO issues with cylinder stretching or anything else.

It is true that Freedom arms is the Abrams of the Cassull round and was the first gun company to make such said gun.

But unless your out to drop hard cash and do some extreme loads youd be just fine with a Taurus or Ruger.

It is an amazing round to shoot. and a reloaders dream. If I had the cash I would pick up a Freedom to add to the collection. but so far our family has taken many, many, Hogs and dear with a Taurus 454 and a ruger 454.

At the very top of my, "I'm gonna hold my breath and scream 'till I turn blue in the face list" is the FA. I've shot a friends a couple of times, It's everything others claim for accuracy, and it is one of the finest pieces of machinery I've ever touched or used. That said I've a fondness for Super Redhawks, but my Blackhawks in .45 Colt will do anything that needs done as far as hunting is concerned.

The Taurus may be as accurate with the loads you fired, but it will not be as accurate with a broad spectrum of loads unless you got a lucky one where everything lines-up just right. FA guns are built in such a way that everything lines-up just right on every single sample.

no doubt that FA makes a fine piece. but many cannot afford a FA, so hence there are more affordable guns that some one may be able to buy. what i am saying is that a person can make a load that can be just as accurate and do what it was ment to do. understanding that you may not be able to make a power house loads that would be just fine in an FA. I have found that with a little time you make a good load for the distance that you may be comfortable shooting a critter at. IE "pig, dear, bear, mountian lion. but if your going to buy this style of gun then it would be of best intrest to load your own rounds for YOUR GUN. there are many bullet makers out there that make numerous bullets and someone can find one that works better than the other.

If i was looking to go after water buffalo, or some crazy affrican game then im sure i would be wealthy enough to own a FA..

Its all about what your comfortable in spending and what you plan on doing with the gun.

this topic could be brought up about every gun out there IE glock vs S&W vs SIG vs Springfield vs Kimber vs Ruger ect ect ect

I look at it this way:

I can own a whole bunch of different guns, or I can own a few very nice guns. FA Premier Grade guns can be had for about $1500 used in like new condition. They are nearly impossible to wear out. If you shoot alot, the FA is definitely the way to go.

I own Many FINE GUNS, and Im not stating that FA is a bad gun at all their very nice. BUT in my OP for the general shooter looking for a good all around gun to shoot and take some game with; theres nothing wrong with a Taurus or Ruger or S&W. what my point is you dont have to buy the most expensive gun out there to be happy. nore to IMPRESS anyone. find something that fits your hand, that your comfortable in buying and makes you feel good.

I have many nice revolvers "S&W, Ruger, Colt" but still think that Taurus makes a good gun, and think that they have been given a bad rap over the years. everyone makes it sound like if you dont buy the best out there that you cant accomplish the task with a cheaper gun. their sub par, not worth buying. this kind of thought process is whats making the shooting sport lose intrest to many people. "IF YOU DONT BUY THE BEST THEN YOUR WASTING YOUR TIME" BS

I have a Taurus 44 mag that has had many of thousands of rounds threw it and is still as accurate as the day it came out of the box. I have ran Whammy loads threw it that would lock up a S&W, rounds that i wouldnt even think about running threw my S&W mod 29. because this is a cheaper gun dose it make it less worthy? less accurate? not as strong?

I have had many EXPENSIVE guns "case in point a KIMBER 1911 tactical custom series" i wont go into all the details but after the second day out and nothing but problems, Kimber basically told me OH well. THEY WOULDNT EVEN FIX IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guns are Guns, yes some may not be as accurate as others, not as nice, not hand made, but in the end its a gun. almost any gun can be made to shoot accurate, with a little time and a little trial and error.

Anyways im not trying to come at you,im just stating some points that i have heard over the years. many people look down on a fellow that may not have as fancy of a gun, I feel that this is wrong and doing nothing to help the sport. In no way am I attacking you. just trying to make my point clear

I'd go with the Taurus. A friend of mine has one w/8" barrel; fun to shoot, and affordable.

Korth makes a good revolver, for those of you with fat wallets.

FA are not "fancy guns"

They are quite plain. They are made better than anything else on the market, though. I'm not saying the Taurus will KB or anything, but it is not even close to FA quality, durability, and accuracy.

Hamilton Bowen does not like to convert Ruger revolves to .454 Casull. Why? Because it does not make sense to invest $2000 in machining and parts into a gun that will shoot loose after a couple thousand rounds. What do the Taurus people know that Hamilton Bowen does not?
