So I got this Redding Model 2400 case trimmer today with a 9mm pilot. I also have a Wilson, but the 9mm case holder does not hold the 9mm cases securely. The ID of the case holder is too large. The Redding works different.

My 9mm brass measures from .750" to .755" in length. I decided to trim to .749", but observed some of the case mouths not completely cleaned-up at that length.

So I went a bit further to .748" and now all of the case mouths are completely cleaned-up...

but I don't like .748"

I think I like .747" better.

To what length do you guys trim your 9mm cases???

I've never trimmed 9mm cases. As much 9mm as I load that would be a pain in the ass.

I wuz gonna start trimmin 9mm range pickups, but decided to wait until hell freezes first.

If I'm looking for ultimate accuracy, I use known fired (by me) brass from bought new (by me) same headstamp.

Theoretically they shrink at the same rate, if fired with the same load, in the same gun.

Never really looked at it.

Besides, if I trim all da case down, I won't be able to duplex as much R1 and H5010 in a compressed load to fire outta my carry Lorcin Spec Ops Limited Edition Blackwater Jubilee

Is the Redding shell holder dedicated to the 9mm or just swag dimension that's close enough?

I was thinking of trying some 9mm trimming on my RCBS but did'nt see a dedicated pilot or shell holder.

Why would it be necessary to trim straight wall pistol cases? Its truly an un-needed step.

Well, you have to trim the cases to the same length to have a consistent crimp. Remember that crimp dies reference off the case mouth, so if you have a .005" length variance that will translate into a variance in crimp. Longer cases will be crimped more than shorter ones.

Further, my Lyman flash-hole deburring tool references off the case mouth, so any variation in case length will result in a variation in the flash-hole size. The tool has a conical shaped cutter with a conical shaped stop ring. If left unchecked, longer cases will have their flash-holes cut to a lesser degree than short cases. This will result in some being overcut and others undercut.

After weight sorting and primer-pocket uniforming, leaving the cases less than perfect would be unthinkable.

TR,

The Redding uses a collet assembly to hold the case and has a dedicated 9mm pilot for the cutter. Redding pilots interchange with RCBS and Forster, so you can try this on your device.

I think you need a Clark license to carry that load, otherwise some overzeallous prosecutor might want to make an example out of you.

Wow brother,
You do take it to the inth degree with your pistol cases. I would drive myself nuts doing straight wall pistol cases like you do.

I dont trim
I dont flash hole uniform
I only taper crimp if that
I dont sort by weight
I rarely segregate

The only time I start to get picky is for my.357mag. my .41 mag. and my .44 mag.

No, not at all.

I have tried the Lee trimmer in the past, but it cut all the brass to .743" which is too short. This Redding unit is much more precise.

Ken Waters, the Pope of Reloading, determined that case length variation is detrimental to 9mm accuracy. So did Jim Taylor:

I'm going to see if it is there is a minimum length threshold for accuracy.

I load low volume. If I had a progressive, I'd have to pick-up illegals on the corner every morning.

BS is the Overlord of Reloading. Ken Waters is the Pope of Reloading, a moral authority without any power, kinda like the Queen of England.

No! Not worthy enough title ..

Your title should be the "PIMP DADDY" of loading the 9mm.
