View Full Version : "Fliers(?)" with cast bullets

So lately I shoot mostly cast bullets, but still shoot some FMJ's (actuall speer TMJ's that I have around from the good ole days). When I shoot 5 of the TMJ's they always group nicely (5.8 gr Unique, 1.135, yes .40 S&W).

When I shoot the cast bullets (155 LRN, either 3.6 Clays or 5.8 Unique, 1.125, LWD barrel in G35), I seem to be able to put 4 of them in the same ragged hole, but on nearly every group I have one flying 2" off somewhere else. 12 yards, standing, two hands, slow fire.

Please vote:

A) This is operator error. Sit down and fire them from a rest and see what happens.

B) Try something different with your cast loads (and then please recommend it!)

Gracias,

Koski

Start with plan A then go to plan B

I vote "A" because that is my preferred shooting stance.

That will eliminate shooter error and should tell you if you have bullets with air bubbles causing them to wobble.

And why are you shooting cast bullets through your Glock??? Dont you know that can get you killed, not to mention at least three people standing to either side of you?

Might be an inconsistent alloy. It happens, as I find out occastionally.

Just skip erry 5th round

Where's engineer boy, he can tell ya all about ya barrel stretchin out when ya shoot.

It just a lil bit so you prolly don't notice

'Slick,

You're a controls engineer, I don't need to school you in solid mechanics. :)

918v,
you might have missed the comment about the LWD barrel.
They've got "normal" rifiling.

Now I ask, HOW can anything that's "twisted" like rifiling be considered "normal" ?

I also vote for "A" first and then going to "B" later. In addition to using the rest being a pretty quick test, there is no point in trying to tinker with the ammo until you know that the ammo is the source of the problem.

Is the flier random or first shot. Does the Glock barrel do the same thing with the same bullet? Want a small sample of Tite?

I have some home cast that do not do that and some Bear Creek bullets that are worse than that. I think the best cure is a MPS (magic pinch of ****) in every bullet.

load magazine with 6, fire first round into target a, fire remaining 5 into "group" on target b........your flier might be from the chambering of the first round manually?
