Powder Differences

Myself and Shovel66 were discussing different powders and the grains used for the 124gr 9mm bullets. He has been using the WSF and I have been using the AA#7. I told him the other day at work that the load data for AA#7 calls for a min of 7.9gr and Never Exceed of 8.8gr and that I was using 8.2gr of powder. I told him that when I am loading it, it looks like the bullet is going to seat onto the powder. When I went to shoot my new loads, they all fired fine and no pressure problems. With the WSF the case is not filled up as much cause he is only using 5.5 gr of WSF. What is the difference with powders where with some brands more powder is needed and others not as much?

Burning rate.
That's slick, short but sweet. Faster powders use less to reach max. pressure. They also peak pressure sooner, so highest vel. can not be reached. Rule of thumb, use fast powders in light target loads, & med.-slow powders in full power & +p loads. AA#7 is a med.-slow powder. WSF is a med. powder.

You can probably also get a 9mm to run with 3 grains of bullseye.

Yup! Quite well in fact with 147gr. bullets.

In addition to burning rate, there's also density. Some powders, like Unique, are faster burning than others yet take-up more space in the case due to the size of the flakes.

You guys mean that Bullseye is usefull for something other than a "priming" charge under a real load of powder? Dosn't every one work with powder charges that start in the 100gr range?
