I was down at my local gun shop last weekend and got my hands on a RIA tactical 1911. It felt nice, not sloppy, had the same basic features as the taurus PT1911. I was kinda leaning toward the taurus because I think it's a lot of gun for the money, but I don't like the sights. The RIA has regular blade sights, but no nite sights/white dot sights (I imagine they could be added). They are both about the same price and have similar features so am I just splitting hairs here or is there something i'm missing? Feel free to bash, I can take it!

In my mind the RIA is the better investment as you can add any custom 1911 part to it you would ever want to. If the Taurus were less expensive and I only wanted a stock pistol then I'd consider it. FWIW though I can't say anything bad about any Taurus I've ever owned or shot.

You didn't ask but.... I like the charles daly bobcat style grip 1911. Feels nice in the hand and really basic.

If a milspec 1911 feeds reliably and can hit a coffee can at ten paces then what more do you need?

How does an RIA compare to a Springfield? Could I get a 5" RIA GI and drop in the 400 Cor-Bon barrel that came out of a Springfield? Those 2 tone Springfields do look DAMN fine though.

I also agree with CW. It will depend upon your desire to tinker and tweak with the RIA over time..

My BIL bought the Taurus 1911 last year and is VERY happy with it.He also voiced your statement "Lots a gun for the money".

The RIA is a high quality product that is at the least the equal of a Springfield. I say this even though I own and love Springfield products too. Yes you can drop the 400 cor-Bon barrel in, but experence has taught me that all "drop in" barrels for a 1911 style pistol always require a little fitting and tweaking to get the desired performance.

I figure I am gonna have to have a 'smith look at the fit and give it the thumbs up before I use it in whichever firearm I get for it so no worries there, thanks.

I have the Taurus PT1911 and I love it. I will be honest with you, this is the second one that I've had. The first was DOA, at least to me it was. The grip safety was non-functional. Didn't matter if you were squeezing the grip or not the hammer would still fall. I never fired a round with the gun.

I took it back to the dealer, Wain Roberts Firearms and they were nice enough to exchange it right there in the store. The second one that I've had has been wonderful. Shoots great. I can hit a golf ball at 30 yards with my handloads.

The finish is a bit thin and its starting to show signs of wear when you remove the take down lever. I love mine, but others have reported problems with them.

Inspect whatever you decide to get first and enjoy.
