So I weighed a trayfull of CCI-500 primers today. Each primer weighed exactly 3.3 grains. I'm not going to weight-sort this component.

I then weighed my prepped 9mm brass and found a +/- .6 grain variance. The heaviest case weighed 54.7 grains. The lightest case weighed 53.5 grains. The spread was pretty even, although the lightest of the cases was a full .4 grains lighter than the next lightest case. I think that case will cause fliers. I'll mark it to see if it does.

I think it is interesting that there is still so much variance in case weight, even after full prep work.

Interesting.

.4 light on one case.

And some people can't understand why we reload.

What dimension did you settle on for case trim length?

Did you weigh them before, or after you trimmed the cases?? :skep:

They weighed roughly +/- 1 grain before trimming.

.747"

That way all the case mouths are cleaned-up completely.

What about cleaning out the primer pockets and uniforming the flash holes? Uniforming the primer pockets? I would think that would cause some weight variations. They might be minor but it might tighten up the weight variations. Whaddya think?

You can't trim that short. They won't headspace properly and you'll kB! for sure.

I did all that: Trimmed the cases to .747", deburred the flash holes, and uniformed the primer pockets. I have power tools with carbide cutters so it went very quickly. I think the lighttest case is a defective one, although it has survived five firings and one trip through a P7.

So what is the minimum trim length?

Some of my R-P cases arrived at .739" from the factory.

I was just jerking your chain. Trim them to nothing, they'll still fire.

I know ;)

But R-P 9mm sucks ass.

What about Starline?

Starline is like Winchester.

IMO, in 9x19, best is FC

Then IMI

Then old school PMC or Starline or Win

You gotta debur after the trim?

Just a wee bit, not enough flash to worry about though.
