Jt finished up my AR lower this w/end. Complete now, total investment after all of my horse trading...$127.

Question...the stock is military issue, so I've been told. Don't know what it's made out of, but it's fibrous appearing. It's not as dark(black) as I'd like it to be. What could I put on it to darken it up permanently?

mine is just like that ... I believe the guy I bought it from on Gunbroker said its a DPMS. I was expecting a black stock too so when it showed up grey I was disappointed, but it has grown on me and I like it a lot now. Can't wait to get my upper ... oh wait, I can take a photo of my sons black upper on it ... be right back

Mine looks about like that too JJB. I wouldn't sweat it if I were you. You could put dang near anything on it to make it black, just keep in mind that you're gonna put it next to your face...so you wouldn't want the color coming off on you.

That setup right there will let you do just about anything else you want. You have dozens of calibers and configurations to choose from at this point. Enjoy that AR!!!

I noticed yesterday that the more you rub on it with your hands the darker it gets. Notice the narrow end of it, it's darker than the butt end. I just kept on rubbing my hand all around it yesterday for a lil bit.

I'm tempted to add a couple of drops of Neatsfoot oil to my hands and see how that works. Then again.....??

I say soak it with CLP & let it sit for a day then wipe it off. I bet it will be darker & "shine like new money"..

That don't work we can take it off & probably gun kote it matte black.

One thing is for sure those stocks are a lot easier to install than the adjustable ones.... No castle nut to deal with....

I noticed a couple of darker spots, don't know from what but it can't be too hard to stain it darker if you want to. I kind of rubbed them off with a towel. Yours kinda looks darker than mine, must be the oils from fondling it, mine looks more Confederate grey :)

I would not soak it in CLP, but I would put a little on a rag and wipe it down. SOP for new chalky lookin' AR stocks. Even Colts.

SOP for real Mullah?

I didnt mean soak it in CLP literally. Just wipe it down good with CLP.

What is SOP?

Mine has a black spot on the upper left side about half or two thirds back.

This is cuz of the greasy oil secretions that come out of my right cheek when i get all 'cited shootin a evil black (and greyish) rifle.

Iffin a person was bothered by the chalky look. I've wiped a few brand new stocks down myself, never needed a repeat treatment. I wouldn't jive ya about important stuff! :cheers2:

That's why I was thinking pure Neatsfoot oil, natural rendered oil.

I was thinking paint might fleck off, Z.

Roger that Mullah.

Oh, thought it might have meant something else the way it was put.

I write enough SOPs at work for a perticular person that should know how to do what is in the SOPs.

An old carpenter showed me a nose oil trick. To keep finish nails from splitting trim, rub nail tip next nose/nostril, lubes it up and it slides right in like you pre-drilled it.

My AR stock was also grey, almost chalky white looking. I sprayed a bit of stuff I got from Big Slick on it and it looks 100 percent better since. I'll look to see what it was when I get home tommorrow morning and post the name of it. He swears by the stuff for almost everything gun related. He said a fellow he knows that worked at Colt for many years turned him on to it. It leaves a coating on the plastic stock, which, you let dry then buff it off with a cloth. Goes on and comes off similar to liquid car wax. Apply, let it set up, polish it off, done. One application is all my stock needed and it has looked great for almost two years since I bought it.

I would hit it with CLP, all kidding aside. It may need another coat ever so often but so does the AR.
I wouldn't dream of painting it...for real.

JJB, don't make it look TOO nice. The AR is like a truck...you want it to still be kinda rugged.

Had an AR furniture set that was painted with brownells alumahide JJB. Pretty sturdy stuff it was! This here is a pic of it painted green with it. The Whole rifle itself was painted black with it also. The guy I sold it to still has it and not a problem with the alumahide so far.

I just slathered up my stock with Vaseline, looked right when I eyeballed it in the medicine cabinet. Petroleum based, usable on sensitive, private parts :)

I'll let it sit overnight and let you know

Holy Cow .... I don't even have to wait. I used a paper towel and just rubbed in circular patterns like when you wax a car ....

it looks great, black crap came off on the paper towels and now it definitely is a black stock not grey though the flash pictures don't show it as in person

I'm going to try another coat to see if the black gets blacker

Alumahide II is awesome stuff. The railed handguards on my AR were refinished with it by the previous owner....

I wouldn't feel outgunned with a nice Garand, CZ. Whatever you do though, don't put a black stock on one or the hippies will be after them too.

Its feels fine. Once you wipe the vaseline off there is absolutely no sign of it whatsoever. The stock still looks nice and dark too.

Back when snakes walked and fish poles had metal ferrules we used to rub the end on our nose to make it easier to put together and take apart.

I found the prices for RRA lowers were coming down so I bought one at my local favorite gun shop/pawn shop.

I thought bulding a lower was much harder than it really is....paying a shop $60 or $80 bucks to do it is a rip off IMHO.

Since I was building a service rifle lower for my #2 service rifle upper which is a White Oak Precision with a 6 1/2 to 1 Pac Nor barrel, I decided to order a Geissele 2 stage trigger. The Geissele with go into my #1 service rifle which is a White Oak Precision with a 7 to 1 Kreiger.

As it turns out the new lower fits tightly on the #2 Lower and is loose on the the #1 upper. The old lower fits tightly on the #1 upper and not as thight on the #2 upper.

I ordered the Geissele from White Oak which has them at the same price as Brownell's. $279.00. Granted lots of money for a trigger.

The trigger came in yesterday. The Geissele trigger comes with a pin pusher, oil, grease, allen wrenches, a fitting pin, a book to keep track of number of rounds and a good set of instructions. I was impressed over all with what all came with the trigger.

Now all I have to do is move the RRA 2 stage out of the old lower and put them in the new lower so I can install the Geissele 2 stage in the old lower.
