View Full Version : Daughter on her own again

Daughter is on her own once again. Her and her live-in boyfriend broke up.
I went over and changed the door locks yesterday. She says the windows are new and close tight. I'll inspect them this weekend anyway.
However, it's a basement apartment and a bit remote. She has neighbors but they are nicely spaced out...150 feet on a side. So a couple things we're looking at is a dog and a home defense weapon.
She's shot rifles and pistols before. She quite tiny though. 5'2" and a 100 lbs, long fingers.
I'm taking her shooting this weekend with a Kel-Tec P32 and my G19. But want to her to get what she is most comfortable with.

More just a young lady alone thing. I don't think the old boyfriend will be a problem.
Yes...she liked dogs. Forgot to mention in my original post that she's allergic to short hair breeds though.
Myself I'm thinking a trip to the animal shelter to find a cute mongrel, but she may have her own ideas.

We have had real good luck with shelter dogs. I think knowing more details on what breeds may be good for apartment life would be good.
Some dogs dont deal well with being cooped up, some do.

You're a good dad :).
As far as the choice of gun goes... it's such a subjective thing; i'd say let her handle every one in the shop. She might like that P32 best. But ya never know, she might also love a fullsized 1911.
Personally, I'd suggest a G19, a Walther PPS, or a M&P 9mm compact. A Bersa 9mm or 380 would also not be a bad idea.

I'd find an older S&W 66, 67, 19, 10, Ruger Speed Six, Security six, Colt Python, etc and load it with the old FBI load. I'd also find a 870 in 20 GA and load it with buckshot and slugs. Keep her a couple boxes of slug and buck on hand, plus a couple boxes of 38/357. If you can't kill it with the 20 GA and revolver, it's immortal.
I'd stay away from the blowback pistols. The kick worse than a full size pistol.
A word about the dog... make sure your daughter is at a place in life where that kind of responsibility is a smart thing to take on. A young single person may do a certain amount of traveling, have restrictive living arrangements, or have other types of schedule variability and instability that can make pets a hassle, regardless of how much she may like or want a dog.

Hey Utah
FWIW,
Revolver for simplicity and dependability. 4in barrel or less 38/357 Gold dots or hydra shocks.
Dont forget a flashlight Surefire, Fenix. etc...
Have a couple of blunt force tools in key places around her place, perferably with some a couple of nails protruding from it.
Dbl lock w/chain on doors have a can of OC spray on shelf by door OC in hand before she cracks open the door etc.
Shotgun load, go with #4 buck more pellets to strike home with extremely devastaing on predators 4 and 2 legged varients.
She lives in a small place get a small dog that thinks his ballz clank. One that will bark to hi heavan when he senses a presence outside. When we would set security perimeters we would run the large visible dogs on the outside Sheperds, Rotts Dobbie... But on the inside of the house Miniture Schnauzer types, Poodles, Terriers. Big dogs can be defeated but the little one inside will get everbodys attention before being defeated.
Put a force multiplier (fist load)on her key ring such as a Comtech Stinger it should always be in her hand as she exits and enters car to bldg/ bldg. to car. They tend to be less conspicious.

holy crap, with all of the above mentioned weapons and such, it would be cheaper to just get another boyfriend.:yikes:

A full size wheel gun should be just the ticket for home defense. Does she have a carry permit? If not, it would be a good idea to get one.

The little one on the right is available to a good home, and the price is right. (I don't think I can get her into a FRB however)

The friendliest 50 lb + dog in the world is a better deterrent than the ugliest most efficient firearm.

dogs are a great early warning system. The gun will take care of the rest.:gun2:

How about an obnoxiously friendly 75 pound dog?:slick:

Thanks guys.
She's had dogs before, so she knows how to take care of them. The apartment is a converted house so there's a yard for a dog to have some room but it's not fenced.
20 Gauge sounds good. I thought about lending her my 12 gauge for the time being. Think I'll take the shotgun with us this weekend too and see how she handles it.
I've thought getting another boyfriend might be cheaper too...for her I mean. But not now...want to give her time to recover from this.
Tailgunner...what kind of dog is that?

Miniture Australian is what they call them locally (a lady in town, now deceased, used to raise them). Merle colored coat, no tail and dosen't shed.
She's kinda rolly polly (35 pounds or so), and MMA can tell you how friendly she is (she tried for a piece of him). My wife says that she dosn't care for men, but I never had any trouble with her

**Cough**BS**cough** I remember a certain Tailgunner telling me she tried it with him a time or two, and then he put her in her place.
If you need a dependable dog that bites, that's your dog. I keep my hands and feet tucked away when she's roaming around when I'm up at Tailgunner's.

Thanks yammerschooner....Inspector Clouseau always understood the value of a good dog :)
Daughter had Vislas before. That's how she figured out she was allergic to short haired dogs. Biggest damn Vislas I ever saw too.
I think she needs a mongrel with an attitude...

Well the dog problem has been solved. A friend of hers just had German Shepherd puppies yesterday and she picked out a female and gave her a name already. So it's a done deal.
I'll post some pictures when I have a chance. I have one on my Blackberry right now...but tired as poop. So later this weekend.
Now for a pistola...hmm...I'm sure there's something I could buy she wouldn't like that I'd have to take care of :43:

Please do, and might I suggest a nice Desert Eagle in .357 for her, with the conversion to .50 for you later! :)

The GSD should do well for her, I just hope it's not one of the larger ones of the breed. Of all the other recommendation's by all mean's get her a very powerfull small flashlight for her home and purse. I favor a 3'' to 4'' K frame S&W in 38 Spl for less experenced shooters with a good defensive load. As far as shotguns go everything said about a 20 ga is excellent, but don't rule out a .410, it's far more lethal than you'd believe. Trust me on this one I know it for a fact. Look at the Mossberg home defense 410 shotgun, it's a super product.
